Apparently this is a possibility. Golden Boy really wants it, and has approached Top Rank deferentially about working together on it (meaning Crawford as the bigger name would be the A-side despite being the challenger - and get any concessions he wanted ...hopefully not including a catch-weight in a title fight). WBO super welterweight title at stake, 1st defense of Teixeira (promoted to full champ after originally defeating Carlos Adames for the interim version in November, with Jaime Munguía officially vacating a week later to move up to middleweight). Could be viewed as high reward for high risk on both the GBP and TR side. Crawford would be going for a world title in a fourth weight class, and Teixeira is probably the weakest of the belt holders at 154 (much easier pickings than Julian Williams or Jermell Charlo) - but this is uncharted territory and would be his physically largest opponent by far. As for Teixeira, obviously he would be the underdog given Bud's pedigree and his relative lack thereof, but an upset here would vault him into the stratosphere and instantly mark him the greatest Brazilian since Freitas ...and, for his promoter, transmogrify an obscure titlist (and borderline liability, if he isn't drawing enough to cover his nut, depending on what kind of purses they're giving him as champ) into a new superstar overnight. Early days, so no talk of venue or date yet - but Arum, who reportedly met De La Hoya's suggestion warmly, has cited a strong possibility of it taking place in Omaha (naturally). I've set a putative date just for the sake of putting up the poll (basing my estimate on Crawford being a twice-a-year fighter who seems to prefer a six month gap between his last outing in the preceding year and first of the new). Not exactly the fight anybody was asking for (most want Crawford to hang at welter and take on Shawn Porter, if not Errol Spence Jr.; and on a lesser scale a lot of hardcore fans were getting themselves pumped for a mooted all Southern hemisphere New World showdown between Teixeira of Brazil and his WBO mandatory challenger Brian Castaño of Argentina) - but we can't always get what we want. What do we think if this fight does come off? The southpaw champ would have a 3½″ height and 2½″ reach advantage over the ambidextrous challenger. Teixeira is considered more of a puncher and Crawford more of a boxer, and yet the latter has a higher KO percentage (and the former was knocked out in 2 rounds in his only defeat, by Curtis Stevens...who, to be fair, is massive compared to Bud).
(and yeah, that is unfortunately Teixeira's actual nickname, chosen by the man himself and printed on his merch t-shirts along with his name; check his Instagram.. )
Yeah, this is a terrible idea, Teixeira is going to **** Bud up. He's too big, agile, fast, awkward, elusive and hits too hard. He's going to make Crawford look terrible and possibly stop him late. I can't wait!
I voted Bud stoppage because I forgot what weight Patrick fought at. Although that's still a possibility
What is the logic here? So GBP gets a potential Brazilian superstar and their first idea is to take a huge gamble on him? (Or worse, try and cash out) Teixeira should be over in Sao Paulo, defending his belt. Or at least on DAZN. Plenty of good fights to be made.
