In boxing, upsets are frequently the topic of discussion.
I may be wrong, but wasn't Moore a heavy favorite to win the heavyweight title against Floyd Patterson? Archie was already the lightheavyweight champ, and was much more experienced than Floyd. Also, I never watched the fight but I've heard that it was one of Patterson's best performances, completely dominating the Old Mongoose before knocking him out. Can anyone elaborate more on this fight?

Watched it again on You Tube, Floyd looked great in there.
It was no mean feat stopping Archie like that, because although Moore was obviously getting on in years, he was still beating good men in the years after that.

    Moore said he overtrained.

Just rewatched this bout. Patterson looked terrific. I see lots of Tyson in Patterson all through this fight. Not only the peekaboo defense and the bobbing and weaving but also the intricacies of changing up angles as he is attacking. Patterson really is underrated in many ways. Great fighter at his best.

According to BoxRec, Moore was favored 9 to 5 going in. Floyd was criticized as someone who hadn't earned his shot.

That canvas looked slippery. Was it an outdoors fight?

I don't know Moore's measurements but his arms always looked exceptionally
    long to me.

Patterson looked great in there with Moore...just great. Those hands...man,...when he fired those combinations Archie didn't have a clue what to do. Marciano was right...Archie just couldn't figure out Floyd. Patterson's blazing hand speed was phenomenal. Yes, this is a forgotten upset.

Thanks, watched the highlight video. Admittedly I don't watch too many fights that are in black and white, the last one was Ernie Terrell vs Bob Foster on ESPN classic. BTW Archie Moore was listead at 5'11 and had a 76 inch wingspan, so yes he did have long arms.

It was probably a age thing to but working against Floyd. To young and inexperienced to beat the veteran Moore. He had put up a decent fight against marciano so that probably worked in Archie s favour with the bookies

Black and white fights, just like black and white movies, are my favorites.

That was the idea in those days. Titles were not floating around everywhere. I even heard it said that in the old school line of thinking a fighter isn't ready for a title shot until he had at least one loss on his record. The thinking being that you can learn from it and improve.
