Patterson vs Chuvalo:how did you score it?

Chuvalo seems to get strange amounts of slack for multiple things now that I think about it.

Revisionist history?

 

The Patterson draw, his stoppage of Quarry mentioned without the count controversy, an injured cheekbone going into the Frazier fight, the Bonavena knockdowns and whether or not they're legitimate.

He was a very good fighter, but I do think his resume and legacy are over expanded upon. Beating guys like Bob Cleroux, Mike Dejohn, an aging Williams, and a single win against Quarry, are good victories, but hardly anything that warrant being considered great. He also lost a great deal of fights and to men who were not always superb themselves. For whatever its worth, he was one of the longest ranking heavyweight contenders, held the Canadian continental title for many years, and proved his durability a number of times at the world level. The quality of his win list is a bit thin for my liking though.

 

I agree completely.

He was a pretty good fighter. Some people are simply attempting revisionist history that he was one of the biggest fish in a very large pond after the true giants like Ali and Frazier, and that really isn't the case at all.

Quarry, Lyle, Bonavena, Leotis Martin, Ellis... They all did better things then Chuvalo.

 

I looked it up. I had it 7-4-1, Patterson.

 

Yes, it always amazes me that some think so highly of Chuvalo. He basically a regional talent on par with Henry Cooper. A guy who dominated his own scene but couldnt really hang with the world class fighters. If you watch the documentary on him he has an excuse for every loss against Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Patterson, etc. But never even mentions his more troubling losses to far lesser opponents. In my opinion his best win, which was over Quarry was a total fluke. Quarry was beating the living hell out of Chuvalo before that bizarre ending. Chuvalo's face was grotesque after the fight. Id pick Quarry easily 9 out of 10 times against Chuvalo and that just happened to be the tenth time. I also get irritated by his insistance (as if its a badge of honor) that he was never dropped. HE WAS DROPPED! TWICE by Bonavena and Mercante blew the call (the only call I can remember Mercante blowing, great ref). Even given this Chuvalo wasnt dropped because when started taking major heat from guys like Frazier and Foreman he basically froze, got battered in a sickening manner, and the fight was stopped. Those were fairly early stoppages and I have no doubt that Chuvalo would have gone down if they hadnt battered his facial features into pudding in such a rapid fashion.

Anyway, there are some who say that Chuvalo was robbed in his WBA title fight with Earnie Terrell, but I haven't seen it, and nor am I about to give a man a higher rating based on what " shoulda been. "

Chuvalo was a very competitive opponent who could be legitimately claimed as one of the better " fringe contenders ", should we decide to manufacture the category. I personally think that one of his fellow countryman in Bob Cleroux was actually a better fighter, but was overshadowed by the fact that he never had losing efforts against Men like Ali, Foreman, and Frazier.

 

Leotis legitmately sparking out Liston is better then anything Chuvalo ever managed. Karl Mildenberger was a very solid fighter as well.

 

i've watched chuvalo vs. patterson over 20 times,looked like a draw to me. patterson stated chuvalo was much to strong for him,with his best shot floyd couldn't make chuvalo blink.what a punch that man could take
