I’d like to say that Floyd absolutely boxes rings around him. But at some point Cooney is going to tag him and … . But at the same time, I agree with Holmes’ assessment in his book questioning whether in his heart of hearts Cooney was ever really driven to be a boxer. I can see Floyd’s hand speed combined with his pop just discombobulating him. I’m on record here that Floyd is my favorite champion and I am picking him, but it would be a dangerous assignment for him. Another one I wouldn’t bet on.
Floyd Patterson possessed some superior attributes over Cooney. But Gerry’s huge size advantage coupled with his immense power and early round tenacity leads me to believe that he’d be a bad opponent for Patterson. Cus D’Amato kept him away from men like that until he couldn’t anymore
This is the kind of fight where Floyd would bring a disguise. He’d be ahead after three rounds before Cooney catches him with a left hook in the fourth and never lets him off the hook. Afterword, Patterson would adjourn to his locker room and don dark sunglasses, a ridiculous beard and a funny hat to top it all off. Then this sharp-dressed man would sneak out of the arena, hit the road and … Join ZZ Top as their new rhythm guitarist, going on tour and rocking audiences around the world with no one the wiser that the former heavyweight champ was onstage. Patterson is the favorite in my book. Cooney didn't have much of a right hand tbh. I concede Cooney does seem to be better than his record suggests and has a monumental size advantage. I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if he took a victory here.
Damn Cooney is geting overrated at the moment. The guy literally fell short every time he stepped up. With chronically overrated fighters like Bruno and Tua, you can at least point to the one tangible win. In Cooney's case you have got nothing.
For whatever it is worth, I am sold on Cooney's power. I am not sold on very much else about him, but his power was legit.
I completely agree. Cooney beat on older fighters to stack up his reputation. He's got a puncher's chance, but he'll need to be Sonny Liston to win imo
Styles and sometimes physical attributes, make fights. Cooney was a lot bigger than Patterson and hit like a truck. At the very least, Cooney hit as hard as Johansson. And Patterson's style would put him in the line of fire. If Patterson had Chuvalos chin, I would easily pick Patterson.
Size is the only advantage Clooney has,i think Patterson is clever enough to eek out a points decision
Lets compare him to one of Patterson's contemporaries then. Cleveland Williams is very much a man whose reputation overshadows his resume. Wouldn't it be fair to say that he hit hard, and that he accomplished far more than Cooney? Are you going to pick him over Patterson based on his physical attributes, or do you have questions first?
I see your point, but Cooney was even larger than Williams. Although I wish Patterson had fought Williams. That would give me a better gauge on how a Cooney/Patterson fight goes
Yeah like I said at some point Cooney will tag him. And as we know Floyd tended to fall down when he got tagged. I am still taking Floyd in the hopes that he’d get up and take it into the late rounds where he’d have the edge, but I still don’t feel comfortable/confident.
