Weird matchup, I know. Patterson dominated the late 50's after Marciano's retirement. He was a blazingly fast swarmer with a style a little like Dempsey's, minus the chin. Liston, on the other hand, came shortly after Patterson. He had a brutal jab, massive power, and great fundamentals, but tended to be on the slow side. Nevertheless, he arguably cleaned out the division before he won the title from...er...whoever it was. Could Patterson avoid Liston's bombs and use his speed to win a decision? Would Liston's late-round stamina give him the strength to stop Patterson before the final bell?! Who wins a fight between these two ATG's?
The first? Are you sure? Remember that Liston took some bombs from Cleveland Williams without succumbing, and fought with a broken jaw against Marty Marshall. Admittedly, Ali beat him in the first, but many suspect that the fight was either a fix or that Liston simply gave up. Also, Patterson didn't stop a lot of guys in the first round. He hit hard, but he wasn't a destroyer on the level of Tyson.
I pick Sonny Liston to knock out Patterson 2:05 seconds in the first round. If they had a rematch, I'd pick Liston to get it done in 2:09 of the first round.
I think anyone picking Patterson to do down in the first is crazy. No world class fighters have ever gone down in the first to the same fighter three times in a row. Was Liston better? Yes. Did he have a stylistic advantage? Probably. Did he pull off probably the two greatest wins of all time?Probably. But could he do it a third time, I doubt it. People dont seem to appreciate on here that no result is cast in stone, and good fighters can be KOd against one fighter most of the time and yet still last the distance in others. There is no way i would bet on Liston in the first round if these fighters met a third time.
 That's an absurdly precise prediction in a fight between two ATGs of this caliber. As for the "rematch" prediction -- come on. That's just silly. What are the odds of a blowout happening TWICE?
You almost hit on a sensible and interesting fight here. Post Martin Sonny Liston against the Patterson of the same period.
I'm sorry, there's absolutely no way to determine the outcome of this fight. I've run it through my super computer hundreds of times and I come up with nothing. Weird. However, Liston would knockout 1.5 Marcianos, 13 Buchanans, and 8 Hearns.
yeah , i'm with hydraulix on this one cross - trainer , i also reckon liston would ko patterson in the 1st round at 2.05 sec and in the rematch win also in the 1st round by ko at 2.09 sec. mate i'm that confident i would bet my life on 2 first round ko's - its about the same probability as the sun coming up over the eastern horizon tomorrow morning. also mate i'll give you a tip , why dont you look up listons and pattersons records on boxrec
If Floyd had been awarded the decision of referee Harold Valan over Ellis in Stockholm during September 1968 (and I had Patterson the winner), I believe he would have felt honor bound to show that he could beat Liston, fresh off his stoppage of Henry Clark. Secure in the new knowledge of how well he could perform over the complete championship distance, I think Floyd would have demonstrated the mature smarts he showed in outmaneuvering Chuvalo to reverse history in a third tryst with an aging Sonny, utilizing his superb conditioning and lateral movement to outlast Liston and take out the older man in the later rounds. Sonny may well drop him early, but like Leotis, Patterson would get up, dust himself off, and keep at it this time.
I don't know. Liston was strong but not very tough like Vitali Klitschko is. He had his jaw broken by some nobody little guy and then he retired in the corner with a shoulder injury to that kid that was nearly stopped by Cooper of all people. He was knocked out cold by Martin who was strong but just okay. He had rematched that near-Cooper victim kid and went down on a nothing punch. He was really quite fragile. I mean, Patterson went to war with Ingo, a HUGE puncher, and yeah he lost but he won brutally, two of three. I gotta go with Patterson by knockout. He was just as fast as that kid who beat Liston twice and hit harder. Patterson TKO5.
I think exactly the same,Hydraulix. Funny about that. Great minds think alike. In fact,I can almost believe this did ACTUALLY happen
