Intresting article. I 'm not suprised cus was calling out marciano since patterson was not ready to fight again until july 57 almost 2 years since rocky last fought. rocky would have been an inactive preasure fighter of nearly 34 years of age. had rocky called his bluff and decided to fight floyd cus would no doubt have ruled marciano out since marciano was an IBC fighter. thanks for posting.

Marciano never would have come back, unless he could replicate the intensity and duration of his former training regimen. For the staged performance with Ali, he worked very hard to trim himself down, losing over 50 pounds, and won Muhammad's respect with the result. Rocky's punch never deserted him. Chuvalo and Bonavena were the closest to Marciano that Patterson ever stepped foot in the ring with, and neither was a cakewalk for a far more seasoned and mature Floyd than the youthful prodigy who would have been dealing with Rocky. Marciano said that he originally believed Patterson would be a hell of a fighter, and was surprised and enormously impressed with his progress and showing against Moore. At that stage, he would not have taken Floyd lightly, a bad omen for the new champion.

Whats forgotting Cus did wait for Marciano to step down or show signs of Marciano slowing down, before he rush Patterson in the top ten. Patterson as a fighter may have wanted to fight Marciano, but Cus was not so sure about the out come on his side.

Of couse with the Rock in retirement, Cus and Patterson can call out Marciano all they wanted akin to VK calling Lewis out of retirement.

Marciano would have knocked the crap out of Patterson. Floyd's speed would keep it a good fight but Marciano would be getting the better of almost every exchange and would knock Floyd out.

Did you take it back because you really don't think Floyd would have won or because you didn't want to be hassled about it?

Very good article indeed. Patterson would soar ahead on points, leaving the Rock needing to score a knockout to win. This he would achieve, after slowing Floyd up with his pressurising work and punches to the head and body.

Marciano ko.Patterson has the skills to outbox Marciano for a while but Marciano is eventually going to get to him and knock him out.Pattersons chin lets him down against a huge puncher like Marciano

I think Patterson could look fantastic against Marciano in spurts, but I have to think, eventually...

Patterson wins in '57 imo, Pattersons speed would always have been a problem for Rocky and Floyd's power is no joke either
