Tunney would be the clear favorite here, but Floyd was a-bit faster, they were similar in weight and size, and Floyd may have hit harder also. Gene was a master of keeping his opponents at the end of his punches and could move as well as any of the greats including Ali. Who do you take here and why?
very tough dec.,tunneys power is always underrated and people will say(he held his hands to low)but despite all this the great analyzer would come in with a plan and unless he got caught he would pull off a win over the also underrated floyd-but its close i say out of 100 maybe 55/45 tunney
Tunney did carry his hands low ,but his quick feet kept his chin out of danger .It took an atg puncher like Dempsey to floor him and no one kod him in 86 fights,in which he scored 48 kos .His power is underated imo.I take him to out point Floyd ,who was dropped by several average punchers like Harris and Mcneely, who had nowhere near Tunney's speed and skills.
Hm, an old Dempsey nearly took him out and whole Dempsey had more power, that Dempsey had slower hands than Patterson. Floyd also had a footspeed to match Tunney´s and was about as good a technician as Gene. It´s close to a 50/50 fight but I think Floyd´s handspeed makes the difference. He would get off first and decision Tunney to close but clear UD.
INteresting fight ... Flyod under rated by many and matches up well with Gene .. I really do not know ...
BIG DEE HERE= Tunney by late rd KO as Tunney`s feet was by far faster than Patterson`s. The only Heavyweight champion with faster feet than Tunney was Ali`s. Patterson`s hands were faster by far but he would be fighting the most intelligent man ever to hold the heavyweight title. At one time Tunney was on the board of directors of fives major companies in the United States before he retired in the 70s. Tunneys punching power is vastly underrated as he was a punishing puncher that hurt his opponent as in his fight with Carpentier who`s manager said later in life in an interview that Georges Carpentier spent a week in bed after his fight with Tunney as Tunney beat Georges so badly he couldn`t get out of bed because of the body punches he received from Tunney as he was black and blue from the chest to his waist.
This might be a better tear up than people here think. People get their idea of Tunneys style from the two Dempsey fights which are not representative. Tunney was happy to go toe to toe when he could get away with it. He fought Dempsey on the back foot because it was the only way he could have won. Against Floyd I see him taking a more agresive strategy if things are going his way.
Finally, another poster gives Tunney credit for being a good body puncher. Tunney vs Patterson is a good match. I think Tunney would defeat Patterson vs decision or late round TKO. Patterson for some reason had trouble with a jabber the likes of Joey Maxim and Jimmy Ellis. Tunney is far better than Maxim, and a bit better than Ellis..
Yes, I agree. I feel Floyd is very underrated on this board and I would take him to win a close UD as well. Floyd had just as much power as Tunney in my opinion and had the faster hands. Patterson also had good head movement like Tyson but suspect footwork as he would often lose balance, which could be a factor as he leaps in against the quick footed Tunney. I see Floyd outlanding Tunney with superior handspeed in a very close fight. One question: Is that Oscar De La Hoya in your avatar?
Patterson beat Maxim when he was green according to the 11 unofficial judges scoring the fight ringside. Jimmy Ellis was another controversial fight that many felt Patterson won even in the twilight of his career.
