Patterson matches up very very well against men his own size. The style that switches this in FLoyd's favour is the fact Patterson had such fast hands and Tunney had a low guard. Patterson is more technically sound and more athletically gifted. Its a bit of a no brainer
OBCboxer, interesting you brought up Ellis-Patterson. Recently I scored the fight from film as I've read about the scoring for years on it. I had it a draw over 15 with a number of rounds that could have been edged one way or the other. Floyd had slowed noticably by the time this fight happened and Ellis was no ball of fire in it either.
Tunney had away better chin, and could box, punch well. I think it would go distance, with Tunney winning.
I was thinking Patterson at first, i like his hand speed and believe it or not, his peek-a-boo jmuping style in this one. But i always say that the one word that i think doesnt get used near enough in describing Tunney is 'rugged', he could also really bag with that straight right, when that right finds the range against a crouching type, he just keeps measuring his man and cracking away until he has him outta there. This could mean an eventual stoppage win for Gene. On the other hand, Patterson is not fighting a much larger man this time as was the case in his actual career at times, his chin just might serve him well, who knows? I think he can win but he MUST keep active and set the pace, he wasnt a swarmer as such, but he would need to keep going all the time to have a chance here, if not i do think he gets stopped by a culmination of right hands. As it is i'll pick Patteson (at cruiserweight!!!)
Like you I heard of the scoring controversy and purchases in 15 years ago, hoping to see my man Patterson winning but the best I could give him was a draw. I re-watched it last month and had Ellis by one point and gave Floyd the benefit everywhere I could. As regards this thread, a great matchup and I favour the more robust better moving Tunney but it's easy to see it going the other way also.
Styles do make fights which is why I think Patterson would do very well. As I've always said, outside of an Ingo bomb and two Liston's who totally had Floyd in bad shape? Always rising (even against Liston). Tunney may well cop a UD (no TKO!) here but Floyd would bring a lot of things to the table that Gene had not seen. Back to styles a moment. One guy that comes to mind is Eddie Machen. IMO Patterson would always beat him in a much more convincing manner than an Ali or Liston ever could. There are other examples. I would give Floyd a decent chance against a few of the ATG heavies out there. My Floyd nut-hugging $0.02
I think Patterson's style could be indicative of the Dempsey fights, causing a flashback of sorts for Tunney. Even though Patterson isn't the mauler or power popper that Dempsey is, the style is enough to keep Tunney to a smart, rigid, technical bout.... probably a 10-5/9-6 UD for Gene.
I think Tunney would win a close decision over Floyd by virtue of his greatest strength, and that was his discipline, or focus. He would remain on task and box and move all night, drilling Patterson with accurate jabs and right hand counters. Tunney's chin was also an asset, and whenever Floyd connected or flurried, Gene would hold up well. I think a deciding factor in the decision would be a flash knockdown scored by Tunney early on. A unanimous decision for Tunney over 15 rounds. Tunney would have less luck with the bigger heavyweights, but I think he would be able to outpoint Floyd.
I got balls... I'll go with Floyd Patterson by decision or TKO late.... By 1926 / '27, Jack Dempsey had slipped and slowed a step or two, and that's basically what MOST people judge Gene Tunney on... NOBODY gives a This content is protected about the 1928 fight with "Tunney & Tom Heeney." Based on Floyd's hand speed and powerful hook, I say Floyd Patterson catches up and does NOT let Gene Tunney off the hook... Gene Tunney was a slick boxer, but not powerful or truly strong.... In a regular size 20 X 20 boxing ring, I see Floyd running him down..... But it would come late in the bout... My guess is somewhere between rds 12 thru 15...... Peace... MR.BILL:bbb
My thoughts as well. Patteson would be in the fight from start to end, but Tunney would dictate the pace and do a lot of work with the jab. The fighting marine has a lot of experience in dealing with great come-forward fighters (Greb, Dempsey) and while Patterson's handspeed would trouble him, he was no slouch himself. Tunney UD 9-6.
Floyd was certainly more gifted athletically, but there's no way that he was more technically sound. Rethink that one.
