I hope you fellas pick right!:D

I say Patterson, because Patterson could brawl on the inside, and box from the outside, and he adjusted his style as he grew older, compare his fight with Liston to his fight with Oscar Bonavena. Also, the head movement never dissapated with Patterson as it did with Tyson. Keep in mind that Patterson was almost always at a weight disadvantage similar to Marciano.

    Just food for thought...

    In my opionon.

    Yeah, probably.

But Tyson did display some versatility in his amateur days as well as glimpses in his sparring sessions but he chose to fight a specific way in actual fights (as a Pro).

Size: Tyson wasn't that big in his era either. Although Floyd really had to move up in weight...especially later on. For me, Floyd was one of the best fighters under 200. P4P, incredible. He just seems to get lost in the discussion because he chose to fight in the HW division in an era that had the likes of Sonny Liston...and all those that followed that were natural 200+ Fighters.

Still liked when he was devastating because like D'Amato thought and Tyson learned...fans like excitement.

:good Good thread. This one is tough because when both were under D'Amato they were both well rounded highly skilled. I think Floyd was abit more well rounded, but Tyson might of had a slightly better defense with the bob and weave vs Patterson's peek-a-boo style. Tyson's defense was vital for him to setup his powershots and provide angles, but I admit there were times Patterson looked scary good. I think Tyson used the peek-a-boo style at times, but to a lesser degree since he was so explosive he didn't need it as much. Floyd was a sucker for the right tho, but when he was in his crouching stance he was harder to hit and had a beautiful jab. He'd triple it sometimes. Maybe if not so chinny with his skills might of upset Liston, but it was not to be. I love his fights with Johanssen great display of skills.

Tyson was one of the most physically complete fighters to ever grace the sport. Unfortunately his mental strength left much to be desired and he let fame, ego, and personal problems destroy his career.

Patterson. I dont remember ever seeing him outskilled, just overpowered. The only guy who outboxed him was Ali and he was competitive. Tyson got outboxed by Tillis and Douglas in or near his prime and many others past prime.

If we seperate Tyson the fighter, from Tyson the man; then it's Mike.

Kevin Rooney trained, with dedication and respect for the history of the sport, then he was a more complete fighter than Patterson IMO. (As for Floyd, that poor bloke was dropped more times than Razor Ramoan's court cases.) Tyson's skill set is a little under rated by some, and drastically over rated by others. He was never going to be the greatest of all time IMO, but he's a solid level above Floyd Patterson in terms of Boxing ability. (Not sure if Boxing ability is the right term; I mean more, his all round strengths and weaknesses, his talents.)

STFU & GTFO patterson was beasting legit LHWs as a teenager. he could actually fight for stretches on the inside unlike Tyson.

Where as Tyson didn't start fighting till his late 20's, right? :nut

You're basing your pick on Patterson holding the advantage (in your view) when it comes to inside fighting? :huh One dimension of a multi-facated sport?

Tyson was the more complete fighter. Maybe Patterson boxed a little more on the outside, but that don't make him a more complete fighter. Tyson would beat Patterson faster then Liston did. How can you be a more complete of a fighter then a guy if that guy would hand you your a** in less then 10 seconds?
