Paulie said if he can't get over the pyschological hump that makes him scared to throw that right hand, he will retire. Not many fighters say stuff like that. Look at the guys last 3 fights. He has gotten worse. He's only 27 and I don't believe he's in his physical prime anymore. Four surgeries is a lot to have on one hand. Paulie is not going to beat any top tier fighters at 140.
BigReg is correct I'm afraid. I know its easy to hold onto delusions that he can do something just because he only lost to Hatton, but it was the manner of the defeat. He was so easy to hit, as he always has been, and he didn't throw anything but a weak jab. That is seriously not good enough at the top level, it won't win fights. Circling and throwing pitter patter jabs ain't beating the best fighters. He already got very close decisions to Ngoudjo and N'dou who are second tier fighters at 140. No way he beats Witter, Bradley, Holt, Hatton as we've seen, Pacquiao...hell I think he'd struggle to beat Kotelnik I really do.
Good post TFFP. I couldn't have said it better myself. The only reason I didn't say Kotelnik would beat Paulie, is because I've never seen him fight.
I thought malinaggi was to small for 140lbs. Can he make 135lbs? He looked pretty small compared to Hatton.
Kotelnik is exactly what you'd probably perceive him to be looking at his background. Upright technical fighter. Not very special and no power, but he does have the use of two working hands. His fight with Witter was extremely close, could have gone either way in my eyes.
I think after a few tune-ups he'll get an offer vs. Holt/Torres, Ortiz, Bradley, maybe even Berto or Clottey at WW - and if it will be a puncher, that's gonna be the end of Paulie I'm afraid. I just don't see how he can put himself together mentally. His hands will be injured forever in his mind, he's not even capable to do what made him a champ and he shouldn't fight one-handed to take unnecessarily punishment. So, I see him take a tune-up and take on a champ one more time - only to fail and retire with the money he earned. Boxing is a tough sport, but it's still a sad story.
