Paul Appleby a shot fighter at 24 years old?

He certainly needs to consider his future in the sport. Has had way too many wars for someone so young.

 

He has no defence.on top of that i think he has no brain so there is no way he can change his style.

 

He should never have taken this fight. I know he only got five weeks notice and had a stone to lose in that time.

He was weight drained and had almost zero punch resistance.

He needs to take stock. He is taking way too much punishment in there. I'm worried about him.

 

U could see that KO coming after 30 seconds of the fight. The ease & frequency with how Simpson was landing big flush shots was incredible.

 

Thats what happens, when you have done boxing from a young age and come through the amateur system in my opinion. Amateur and proffessional boxing has some of the most ******ed people advising people, we have kids up and down the county under eating, when they are at a vital stage in their growth and development. I think most boxers in the lower weight classes are already ****ed, by the time they are grown men.

I don't think boxers are a picture of Health or lead healthy styles.

I know some kid who weights 80kg, and is thinking of fighting at 68kg! This is a growing teenage still developing and is already lean.

 

I don't like Smigga, but he may have been spot on about the war with Walsh taking the last vestiges out of Appleby.


You'd think with all the wars Simmo himself had been in, plus being older and more experienced, it would have been him having trouble dialing back the clock. Nope. He did the job big-style. Appleby couldn't dig down and match that, nothing left in the sack.

 

my first post on here... just watched the fight.. of tonight... what a waste of TALENT..... if you have chinese food and are down the pub all the time... how do you think you deserve to win tities???????????? boxing is a sport... not a game... GET REAL....

 

Szabo, Simpson (twice), Lindsay and Walsh all gave him draining battles. That's five fights which must be a high percentage of his total bouts. That plus hard sparring (Burns, Simpson again etc) and weight-making all adds up.

 

The difference between Scott and Paul tonight was that one was in shape to fight while the other wasn't. Look at their respective physiques. Scott was hard, muscular and full. He'd clearly prepared well, eaten right, and entered the ring at his optimum fighting weight.

Paul's physique bore all the evidence of undernourishment, smooth and flat, retaining water as a result of his body trying to hang on to its resources.

The vast majority of fighters, pros as well as amateur, have little knowledge of nutrition. Neither do the trainers. In this respect the sport is still in the dark ages.

 

The punishment appleby taken was sickening - 0 head movement.

Was ringside tonight and was (briefly) concerned for his wellbeing. He was still on shaky legs leaving the ring!

 

So for the people that watched the fight, is he shot? Or can he have a break and come back and do a job?

 

Ok haven't seen the fight been at work and missed the action, Had a feeling Simpson would win and glad he did.

Now i've followed Paul's career with interest, can remember him blowing away sub par opposition with ease. He got his title chance against Simpson and won in a close fight. A fight where i felt Simpson won BTW..

I did feel he was pushed to title level a little early, he was a early developer physically. The face of a teen with the strength and size of a mid 20's man. He had a lot to work on technically but was rangey and had power so was promising. He beat Simpson and then fought Pickering which was smart match making let him grow into title and 12 rounders. He then fought a journeyman before i feel the major mistake in Paul's career happened.

There's times in a career where you have to look at financial side of things and the career aspect. They recieved a very large amount of money IIRC from Hayemaker to face Martin Lindsay in Belfast. Now for me the money was fantastic for British title but this kid was promising, had a lot of schooling to go and needed more time. To accept and fight in Lindsay's back yard was utter madness IMHO.

Paul was beaten up, pure and simple Lindsay set about him in brutal fashion. Paul couldn't deal with the skill nor the atmosphere of the Kings Hall that night. When you become a champion you go from the hunter to the hunted. Paul never had the tools to deal with this. He was good enough to win, but mentally he wasn't prepared for setbacks like the one in Belfast.

The Layrea fight was another poor call, the information in build up about him apparently fighting Burns for WBO title if true that's another silly idea to let a kid know before a tough fight. A fight which showed he was far from a world title...

4 Years ago this kid was one of our brightest prospects north or south of border. To see his career now in ruins pretty much saddens me. The kid hasn't been managed to become a great. He's been guided by what makes sense for them.

I hope he evaluates things, have a year or two away. Train a bit and see if he gets buzz back and see if he can learn in the gym. I don't think he should continue at this point though. I think he does need time away from sport for a bit.

BTW this is my opinion on his career, yes i may have things wrong but it's just my thoughts from outside looking in.
