Paul Butler V Ashley Sexton

Just looked and can't believe Sexton is still unbeaten.

Mike Robinson has 'beat' him twice if I remember correctly.

Shinny Bayaar was robbed in the draw fight too.

Butler wins for me, the most one sided poll I have seen on here.

 

To be honest, I'd never seen anything from Sexton before his fight with Bayaar that made me really stand up and think he was a major talent. The hype surrounding him started to rapidly increase after he stopped that Pires, a fighter that had a record that was pretty at first glance but one of the most padded I've ever seen. He then scored a highlight reel KO over Uzzy, who, bless him, was making the most of being in the division with the most devoid amount of talent domestically. After these wins, you had people like Colin proclaiming him to be potentially world class!? As far as I was concerned, he hadn't proven anything really.

He got hyped based on very little and it really shouldn't have been too much of a surprise to people that he came unstuck against a seasoned campaigner like Bayaar. I think his performance in that fight - a shocker for him, although he displayed heart in the final third - and subsequent contests have shown what level he really is at. Nothing wrong with being a domestic contender, but all the previous talk of him going to European level and beyond has been shown to be very premature. He was a good amateur and is still only 24, so I won't write him off from getting a British/Commonwealth title yet, however.

As for his career stalling, he seems to have had plenty of chopping and changing behind the scenes which won't have helped. Switched trainers for a short period, has been promoted by Maloney, Hayemaker, Coldwell and Frank in the last two years etc.

With regards to a Butler-Sexton match-up, I do like the look of Butler and I'd expect him to win it with a bit to spare. He's in a somewhat similar position as to what Sexton was before the Bayaar fight, but his class should shine through. I'd look forward to the fight if/when it happens.
