Sorry man, I've never seen Butler run so much. Even against Emmanuel Rodriguez who almost stopped him in the first, he was a far more stationary target. I guess he actually learned from his mistakes. Also, clearly a last minute replacement, Sultan didn't come expecting that kind of game plan and it showed. Yet even then, the fight was far closer than the scorecards and commentators implied.

Glass jawed ass? He's only been stopped by prime Tete.. has gone 12 with the likes of Rodriguez & Sultan.. you could at least give the kid a bit of credit for proving you totally wrong , I personally don't give a **** about Butler but he performed well there against a solid opponent that you said would decimate him

No, I'm not giving him any credit Licorice. You know I won't, so why even start with me?

I was being polite referencing his 'extravagant movement' earlier. It was running, as you called it. My main issue with that style is simple. If both boxers choose to stand centre ring and throw leather, we have a fight. If they both chose to jockey for position on the edge of range, we still have a fight. If both are slick and evasive with subtle movements - guess what, we have a fight. But if both boxers employed Butler's tactics of circling at speed for 20 seconds at a time, the ref would call time out and warn them...

There was always the chance that Sultan could catch Butler with something telling at some point, but he's wildly flawed and Butler has always been a tidy boxer, if not quite the prodigy advertised early in his career.

Question was always going to be whether Paul's clear edge in competence, and his ability to withstand a punch when necessary, would be great enough to fend off the flip's intensity for the full distance.

Butler punched, and hit Sultan hard and clean, plenty enough.

Sultan is just a wild, flawed fighter who lacked the nous to pin down the better boxer. And when he did land, the power wasn't great enough.

I see only credit for Butler in this performance. He was a sizeable underdog and he made Sultan appear clueless for much of the fight, pinging him with good shots clean and often.

Never was a fan, but kudos where it's due.

With a perfect shot he never saw coming and walked straight onto.

Butler's chin is decent. Inoue blasts him out, but that's no shame. Inoue has blasted out guys noted for their toughness.

I honestly did not see it anywhere as one-sided as the consensus appears to be online. I think anywhere from 116-112 Butler to 114 even is fair. Maybe some of the terrible camera angles made it a little more difficult to score than usual for me.

Also very funny that Sultan suddenly made the Ring top 10 at 118 right before he fought a brit as a late replacement, just so Tom Gray could have another underserving countryman on there... Ok I'm talking out of my ass and I'm usually not prone to conspiratorial thinking, but I really can't help but mistrust those dudes at Ring. Fighters suddenly appearing on the ratings before certain fights, just seems really sketchy to me.

Fair assessment. I thought Butler looked at his best when he lurked just out of range and then moved in to plant his feet and trade, and his worst when he circled the ring laterally. It's a personal preference thing: I just don't like watching boxers essentially neutralise the fight by moving well out of range. It's the polar opposite of excessive clinching but has a similar impact in terms of kill phases of the contest, although Sultan was very rudimentary in terms of how he tried to close the gap.

I suspect Butler merely executed the game plan worked on for facing Casimero, which makes sense considering it was such a late switch of opponent...
