I think that in light of the fact that Ali became a great champion and fighter a lot of these stories are blown up. Everyone knows Ali had strong ties to the Tampa mob because of Angelo Dundee s brother Chris and Ali had ties to the Newark NJ group of criminals called the black Muslims, Jeremiah Shabazz and the group were drug dealers and extortionist so there were a lot of this energy around the fight before. I think the thing we must remember is that Sonny also had a friendship with Frankie Carbo so I dont think fear would be a factor with him, in addition he was a street/prison guy so not a scary cat. I think it could be a case of feeling old in fight one with the quick and confident Ali and a sort of NO MAS because it was embarrassing and a opportunity to cash in on fight 2 with an exaggerated KO or bad acting and for that one Sonny may have used the aid of his own friends placing bets.

I heard a lot of stories but IMO I think it may have been a combination of the factors I stated
