The article was only talking about the Heavies. Thats true on the earnings of the very top earning boxers which is a very small percentage. I'd hate to see a graph to show how quickly those earnings drop off when you're not one of the elite. I'd also be interested to see some stats on how many fighters drop out of the sport. Sure some of that comes from injury and health concerns but there are plenty that get jack of not seeing any money and the hours spent in the gym whilst having to hold down a job too. Start listing the Aussies we've lost to the sport, your list would grow pretty quickly. I don't think boxing is dying, the sport at the top level does great figures and has its support, but the rich are getting richer and the money doesnt seem to spread around.
..I think the point of the article was why a Heavyweight title fight just slips under the radar and no one seems to give a ****.. ..and Evanders response was spot on..'we dont know the opponents anymore'.. ..there's no rivalries anymore it seems..or they're now on the other side of the world.. ..I remmember a Angelo Dundee interview a few years ago where he predicted all this..and basicly it comes down to there's so much money in all the other sports in America that all the young up'n'coming sportstars go to NFL and basketball etc etc..
Same thing applies here, particularly in the higher weight divisions. The big guys prefer rugby & football.
The heading of the article is titled " WHY BOXING IS DYING". Kent says in the article Quote.. " THIS IS WHY BOXING IS DYING''. He then tells us that the Heavyweight division is weak... Thanks Scoop. He then tells us that Evander may be past it....Thanks again Scoop. Kent will put the boot into boxing any chance he gets, he has been doing it for years.
But there is far more competition to make the team in the high profile sports. Heavy weight boxing is wide open at the moment. Surely there are a lot of fringe players (Grid Iron, basketball, League etc) who would be better off taking the gamble and switching to boxing for a good pay cheque.
There are meaningless title belts all over the place now and nobody knows who holds them. According to the 6th May dated WBU heavyweight rankings their champion is 50 year old Andreas Sidon. Okay it's a nothing title, but 50 years old, and who ever heard of this guy? WBU World Champion Andreas Sidon ( Germany ) 1. Wladimir Klitschko 2. Vitali Klitschko 3. Lucas Brown ( Intercontinental Champion ) 4. Tomasz Adamek 5. Jonathan Pasi ( European Champion ) 6. David Rodriguez ( NABU Champion ) 7. Robert Helenius 8. Odlanier Solis 9. Alexander Povetkin 10. David Haye 11. Mark De Mori 12. Chris Arreola 13. Denis Boytsov 14. Ruslan Chagaev 15. Gene Pukall ( Former World Champion ) http://www.wbu-boxing.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=58&Itemid=27
You could be forgiven considering boxrec has Wlad and Vitali the other way around, but if you posted the rest of that list on the General forum you will be banned for trolling.
The WBU have just elevated 50 year old Andreas Sidon to the status of WBU Super World Champion >>> "Andres Sidon is elected to the new WBU Heavyweight Super World Champion since 6th of May. The reason of his election is his retirement end of 2013" - from WBU website. Paul Kent's article is vindicated.
Its a case of the haves and have nots. What you say doesnt mean the sport is doing well. You only have to look at the number of local fighters who have to sell tickets to pay there own way.
