When you see the White Whitaker in a few weeks you will be astounded when he takes apart Morrison. I hope he does not let me down.
Watched McCloskey for a couple of weeks in John Breens gym. He excites me, good whiskers too, will go far
Can someone explain why this guy turned pro so late. He's damn near 30, yet only has 18 fights and is still fighting for domestic belts.
I've never seen him get tagged with a big punch,he's either hit with a glancing blow or he's moving backwards when hit.His unorthodox style makes him very difficult to hit cleanly.I hope he has a good chin, if so he will be very difficult to beat
extensive amateur background, lots of irish titles but just didnt have the style that could be translated into olympic level amateurs, decided to give it a go at pro when the scene was not near as big as it is now in ireland and he has fluorished with his counterpunching style, ive watched most of the mccloskey fights and his worst performance is the wright one and i feel that was more experimental. he was caught big by lynes in the second round and with his style hes gona get caught at the top level, but so far he has shown very good recovery powers. im sorry i like barry morrison, but he isnt on the same level as paul and in all likelihood it will be a wide UD.
Hi BigReg I've no idea why he took so long, the Irish posters would know. But he hasn't been wasting too much time by British standards, his resume isn't too bad in such a short time. He even took his British title fight as a very late replacement, so he shows signs of taking any opportunity if he gets the chance. Why the interest?
He didn't have an IBF top 15 rating(nor does he currently), and the IBF have both an International and Inter-Continental belt with the Inter-Continental being more important. IBF International fighters are actually rarely in the top 15. With all due respect to Barry Morrison, who I do like I think Paul will be all wrong for him and I think this could be quite an easy win for McCloskey. Morrison struggles against fighters with good laterally movement who are prepared to counter. If Morrison is to have a chance he'll have to do what Wright did and force it into a war. The problem with that is McCloskey only had a tear up with right because one of his eyes closed after a headbutt and he hadn't the vision to do what he normally does. Another problem with that is McCloskey was still too good for Wright(although it was a close fight,96-94/97-93 stuff) even when that did happen. What's interesting is the winner of the Olusegun-Haywood fight becomes the mandatory for the winner of this one. It's crazy to think that Ring magazine bradished McCloskey the most protected fighter in boxing around the time of the Bazan fight. He wasn't even that protected then(for a fighter of his experience) and now he's just making those claims seem ridiculous.
If he was protected he wouldn't take a British title shot on short notice, he'd bide his time. That speaks volumes for his confidence. It will be fantastic if the winner of this meets...Olusegun.
Interestingly I think the BBB of C have said the winner of this fight should fight the winner of Ajose versus Haywood. The problem is that we have the final eliminator with Witter for the WBC title so if all goes to plan it might be impossible to fit this in unless we end defending the world title against McCloskey or Morrisson.
C Money, who was one of the very best posters and analysts on ESB was the one who championed McCloskey first on ESB, as far as I remember. Where are you, C Money?:?
