ffs usual Smith hater bull****. I thought it was a decent enough scrap... certainly a lot better than Broadhurst vs Haskins and Clottey vs Pacquiao (mind you I'm more unhappy I stayed up until 4 to watch it).

Smith got a horrendous cut early on, and it was survive at all costs after... as it should be. I agree, the lack of combinations was infuriating at times but because both fighters were so determined to win the style went out the window.

As s&c said... what did everyone expect??

 

Sadly I have to agree with the gist of this thread, he holds like a mutha****er in there.

It was funny to see Dodson get a point when Smith had been involved in a huge clinchfest against Quigley - there is one common denominator there. He was initiating many clinches and then putting his arms out to make himself look innocent and the ref fell for it hook line and sinker.

I have to agree with this assesment. There was holding on both sides, as there is in most fights, and lack of boxing finesse was annoying at times, but sometimes you have to appreciate a fight for what it is, or what it is likely to be. Heart, grit and determination and more activity is what won smith the fight, and to be fair, he was fighting the cut, blood, and dodson, who did NOT want to fight

 

I agree, dont get me wrong Smith is good at what he does, but I really dislike watching his fights.

 

fair enough mate, we can't like everyone. I think there is a fine line between appreciating what someone does in the ring but not liking it, and just being a hater! Clearly you fall ito the former category.
I have to admit smigga is better than what he is shwoing, as he is a little right hand happy at the moment, whereas earlier in his career, he could switch the attack well.

This thread is a bit harsh on ruiz though, the guy is a former two time world champion and fighting for the title again in a few weeks while smith is at domestic level and not really excelling there.

 

The common denominator is that Smith was fighting people who chose to spoil, hold and maul rather than box - Quigley because he has to; Dodson because he chose to.

Smith was definitely more sinned against than sinning in both these fights. There is a lot of hate for him - I understand it from a 'spectacle' point of view but in his last fight he battled through bad cuts, caused by Dodson, and I thought it was gutsy. When Dodson actually opened up in the last rather than hugging him like he was his woman, Smith responded in kind and that was a good (brief) watch.

 

In the worst and weakest division out there. It don't mean much to be a heavy weight world champion right now.

 

I agree, hey the lads winning titles which is the main thing. To be fair to Smith it has mainly been in the last 2 fights that I haven't enjoyed watching him, maybe because of the styles, maybe because with both I was probably expecting more of a Quigley/Dodson kind of derby which is why i'm dissapointed.
