Interview up on IFL with Paul Smith. Says he turned down a fight with Chavez in Mexico due to a lack of money on offer. Says instead he wants a big fight in February and would like a run out on the December 10 card. Tbh he should have taken the Chavez fight, assuming the offer wasn't derogatory. I for one think Chavez would destroy Smith but if Smith has an ounce of self belief in his ability, he'd fancy his chances against a lazy, past his prime Chavez and a win there would set up a big fight. What is it with Liverpudlians thinking they are just entitled to a big fight? Plumber Pricey and now Smith. Earn it ffs.
I'd actually argue this was a big fight (unless the Mexicans have totally turned on him), possibly than the Ward fight. But why go through hell for Chavez when you can make decent money being half assed for a 6 rounder against a scrub?
And lost to all of them. He hasn't beaten anyone of note and only good showing he put up against a top fighter was against an aged and off the boil Abraham, which he couldn't do a second time when Abraham took him seriously and comfortably beat him. If he wants a top fight, beating Chavez would have gone some way in meriting him one. Beating the Hungarian and Pole he did in his last two fights doesn't do that.
Paul Smith must be one of the most fortunate boxers to ever earn what he's earned out of the fight game.
But even then, his commentary skills aren't much to fall back on! Paulie well ahead of him and Bellew did a fantastic job in his first commentary role for the Usyk fight. Maybe think about role as a trainer. Worked with Buddy McGirt for a bit and been around some top domestic trainers for some years so will have some good knowledge to pass on.
Oh ffs, he has officially turned it down, I was sure he'd take it. Now what am I going to do with all the "Battle Of The Bulge" t-shirts I had printed?
Smith has had some big fights. Abraham for his title, Abraham again for his title, Ward straight after. Smith has been a British champ at a time when unlike the SMWs of the 90s when there was Starie, Francis, Woods, Catley, Calzaghe, Reid, Woodhall, Carr
Think Smith get's a lot of unnecessary stick on here. He has put himself in there with big names, you can't knock him for that.. he'll fight whoever. But that said, who has he beat? Best win is Dodson.
