Paul Smith vs. Tony Dodson II, 12 rounds @ super middleweight

 

Round 1

Smith is circling to and fro, working a crisp left jab as Dodson moves toward him lackadaisically in straight lines. Nice left hook by Smith, anticipating Dodson's avenue moseying in. Quick fades laterally by Smith after landing, not letting Dodson get into the conversation.

10-9 Smith

 

Round 2

Dodson is taking lunging steps in and missing jabs over the ramp of Smiths' gloves and up past his forehead. Rights to the body by Dodson. Short hooks by Smith while circling out. Jabs trickling in from mid-range by Smith while tracking left. Smith has a cut on his brow. Dodson is trotting in and out, throwing hook feints and collapsing on Smith with clubbing rights across the guard.

10-9 Smith but closer, Dodson the aggressor.

20-18 Smith

 

Round 3

Dodson is attacking vigorously, dropping the right hand and jabbing or hooking at Smith's head with each forward step. BIG left hook by Smith, exploiting the large space left under Dodson's airborne tentacles. Dodson staggers and loses his footing. Dodson is unready to quit. Another big left hook downstairs, causing Dodson to gasp. Smith has Dodson very badly hurt. Dodson is cut by a punch. Dodson rallies and pushes Smith to the ropes with a dusting of jabs and rights. Smith is shoring up his energy, perhaps having invested more in those body shots than he could afford.

Round 4

Dodson is using feints, leaning halfway into the pocket, faking a diving right hand, trying to make Smith react and create openings to counter the counter-puncher. Smith instead patiently crisscrosses his legs moving left and pumping the jab. Body work by Dodson. HUGE left rip downstairs by Smith, causing Dodson to halt for a moment. Dodson leaps in with high jabs. Blistering straight right counter to the face by Smith. Very nice jab popped by Smith while luring Dodson around the ring. Dodson is mostly cautious but leaps in with a short right hook pounding into Smith's side at the bell.

This is by far the best I've ever seen Paul Smith.
