Gallagher fighters tend to lose when matched tougher. Hearn keeps giving them lots of knockover jobs so Gallagher can boast about what a fantastic trainer he is.
Paul Smith could lose to a Latvian journeyman and he'd still argue he is world class and just couldn't get motivated for a small name fighter. Tbf to Paul if anyone here was getting paid £10,000ish for six rounds work against a guy coming to lose, we'd do it too. He must have made at least £300k+ for the Abraham and Ward fights. At least he's made money to set himself up a little after boxing.
Smith's best win is against Tony Dodson FFS. Most people would give him a pass for trying to hang on for another title shot if he was at least a former world level fighter on the way down who cant accept its over..but he is a never was, domestic level operator banged out in 2 by Grooves and Beat up and stopped by Degale. If he must fight on he should be in with a Murray,Rhyder, Feilding or Blackledge type opponent.
If it wasn't for his younger brothers, Sky and Eddie would have dropped Paul like a stone years ago. The Smiths are a great UK boxing family, and there's a lot for them all to be proud of. But there's no chance Paul gets all these opportunities based on his own merits. It just helps keep everyone sweet.
Yeah for how opinionated paul is especially...needs to back up the talking. Dont get why fighters nowadays dont want to build momentum and then go into a big fight off the back of it. Mostly play as safe as they can holding out for the big jackpot fight that they have little chance of winning. For all the talk of the fighters confidence going into the big ones its actually like they dont have much confidence in themselves at all bearing in mind they dont take on challengers in and around there actual level beforehand. See it as cheating the fans to an extent as well as the other fighters. Would actually much rather they left the sport rather than sitting around seeing where they can cash in without proving themselves. Even if they came up short no ones saying you cant come again. No shame in it. But cant stand sitting it out taking oppertunities guys that are actually trying to prove themselves could have got. We had liam smith the other week against canelo. To me there was nothing competetive about that fight whatsoever. Liam smith got shown up as never gonna be world level imo. No shame in it. But to listen to interviews you d think he won it the way some are going on. Talks of Brook. Cotto. next. Will probably not fight in britain now the americans have got a look at how good he is etc. No doubt he ll now go down the same route as paul. Staying away from anyone live to wait for an oppertunity for a pay day. And yet hes not even proven himself against anyone yet really.
Liam should have flown to the States earlier but 2 of his brothers had the chance of "earning" a few quid against journeymen the Saturday before.
Whilst I dont blame him for taking a payday for a glorified sparring session like this, he's pretty much killing off any interest anyone has in him as since the Dodson fight his only 12 rounders were abraham and Ward. should at least go for the European or try to win the British again and get that defence to keep it outright. Get the feeling he's hoping groves wins the WBA and then he can get beat by him again and retire
I'd love to see him get sparked by some chubby Latvian Welter with a 4 - 27 record. I'd laugh I DON'T wish him well (and that's not like me)
He shouldn't of gave it up in the first place brother or no brother. He was the only one out of them who would of realisticly won it outright. No way will the BBBOC let him box for that any time soon and callum needs a world title before he gives it up.
true - frank got him a defence against Luke Blackledge if I remember correctly that he would have won fairly comfortably IMO but then he left frank and that fight fell apart, Eddie tried to get Tobias Webb but the board wouldn't allow it so he just kept it hostage for a few years whilst fighting 6 rounders pre Abraham In all honesty I wouldn't be shocked if he felt he was above the British title, and barring getting 6 figures for each fight (or very high 5 figures) I doubt he'd consider it
