Paul "The Punisher" Povetkin offered World MW title shot and $1.5M, but still says no

2 or 2.5...but it was a lowball offer nonetheless. if paul is confident of victory he would/should take it. at the same time though, a big rematch of a foty year candidate fight w/ a controversial ending all for the mw title...i would think hbo can do better than 3 million.

i don't know if williams' handlers are holding out hope they can get in on this whole pac/pbf money train and don't want to risk any shot they might have on a mw fight. i have no idea.

HE needs to hop between weights that way he can dodge everybody that's been calling him out with an excuse.... this fighter has turned into a stinker, just as I thought from the beginning, just quicker than I thought.

 

Williams is on some serious dope if he thinks he should get more than 50-50 for fighting Maravilla again. Sergio is the man at 160 now after taking the belts from Pavlik. Though their first fight ended in a Williams decision, it was a highly controversial "win" for him.

I had Sergio beating Williams in a close fight that night. Paul should take this title shot and the reigns, if he can. These two guys make for a great fight.

Fight Maravilla, PWill. He's itching to give you a rematch.

 

Belts don't mean what they used to. There are so many of them it has watered down the meaning.

If Williams beats Martinez, which I don't think he will, where would that put Williams in position to fight who?

Where has that left Martinez, both at 154/jrMW, and 160/MW?


A fight with Cotto, Chavez jr, Pac, Floyd ?

Are either Williams or Martinez getting any of them at this moment?

Now the difference between the two: Martinez is 35, Williams is 29. One has more time if he is careful. Except if that one, the 29 year old, wants to be in another very tough fight that will age him even more quicker than many other bouts he could possibly take. But if you are going to be in a very tough fight, try getting as much as you can and you can do that if you are fighting a bigger draw.
The other is looking for a rematch and will take a check of 1.5 million because it is good money considering his position.

What would be the difference in winning a paper belt at 160 than the lineal title give even big superstars like Pac don't care about it. Floyd doesn't fight for belts anymore. And Cotto likes paper-titles.


The lineal title means something to those that continually follow the sport but the most money a fighter can get does not come from them. It comes from all those casual viewers looking for a big fight that has that certain "name" involved.

If he hadn't fought Martinez before, yes, absolutely it would be a great deal. But now that both are still stuck looking at each other and at a price of 1.5 million each....what's that say?

Pavlik isn't Williams. Pavlik could never make JrMW.

Pavlik ended up fighting Lockett after Taylor. And then had to move up to fight Hopkins.

Is that the plan for Williams?
Win the Lineal title at 160 then move up to 168+ and fight one of those guys?
That is an option but it would probably be to soon given Williams weight. He would be better served to take his time and build up his body. So if he is going to do it, he would have to do it now and stay at 160. He would have to Hope his risk of fighting Sergio is successful, which I wouldn't bet on, and then make his way into the higher division when he can. Unless, he can lure someone like Cotto, Pac, and Floyd to MW. I'm sure one at least would ask for a catch-weight anyway.

But at that point, win or lose against Martinez, how much does he have left?


Again, the reason(s) why he wouldn't want to risk it against Martinez is because the first fight was incredibly tough. So tough it looked like it had an effect on his next performance. One more fight like that and the 29 year old will turn into a 39 year old. And for 1.5 million, is that worth the risk given the possible options he could take?

Get a paper title at 160 and you still can be alluring to certain fighters and to casual fans; it won't make a difference. What is more important is trying to secure big "name" opponents for the highest price you can get. And if you can't at the moment, weigh your options.

Agree; He shouldn't get more. It's a 50/50 fight. It's a fair split given the two fighters.

 

Martinez beat the crap out of Williams, knocking his head back over and over and over again! Martinez did even have time to train for that fight! Can you imagine if Martinez had had time to have trained? Williams and Goosen know that. That is one reason they took the fight in the first place! They knew that Martinez did not have time to train. They were fooled. That fight should take place in a neutral place with neutral judges. Goosen should have given Cintron a rematch because that fight was not finished at all. That fight happened in Williams/Goosen's territory. Big fights should not be in a fighter's home town.

If a fighter wins a fight fair and square, that's one thing, but when a fighter loses, really loses, he should, well, lose! How can home town decisions be stopped? What is the best solution?

Again, I'm looking at it from a possible Williams point of view. Not what I want. But what he may be looking at it.


I'm in favor of the fight. I think it deserved a rematch as soon as it was over.

Now, What most likely happens if Williams fights Martinez?

Martinez wins. Then tries to set-up matches with everybody from 147-160 that has a big name. Would he get it? Not sure. However, he could look North and fight the winner of the Super-6...although I'm not sure what his deal with HBO is at the moment. Bute is there but as of now, that is probably high risk, low reward.

Martinez has said that the fight he would like most is a fight with Floyd.

Why Floyd?

Same reason why Williams want$ him.

Both would take a fight with Pac as well.

Why Pac?

Same rea$on as taking a fight with Floyd.

And lastly, again, I like Martinez more.

If Pac is to step up to JrMW, he should have fought Martinez, not Margarito. And "F" the catch-weight. Martinez vs. Floyd would also be a good fight.

 

It was a disputable decision. One of those home decisions that ruin boxing.
