I personally believe Tall Williams may be finished at the elite level. It's just speculation on my part, but I would not be surprised if he has shown signs of slippage in the gym. With his "hey im gonna throw punches & hope something happens" style with no defense to speak of, your career can end at anytime. If this is the case, Martinez would knock him out, so why take that fight? They'll take some fights that a diminished version of Williams can win.

 

And btw, Sergio is the one with the most to lose. He's giving up 50/50 even though he's the champ. What will happen if he loses? He will be coming off two losses against the same guy who's now the MW champ. He won't get a third one. He'll soon be 36. I'm not saying it would be impossible to get back but most likely he will be handed risky, low-profit fights against guys like Pirog. He will have to work his way up whereas PW would get more chances immediately. Well, I guess Angulo is a plausible choice who can get him some money...

He's doing his part I feel, even if it's hard to judge just from Rafael's blog. We don't have full insight into the negotiations (remember all the experts with "close sources" on Pac-Floyd?).

1.5 seems like a lot, and it is to you. However, to a fighter on that level it may not be so alluring. After all the subtractions 1.5 isn't quite the same. And overall, long-term, you have to look at that.

However, someone like me looks at the big picture, looks at the long-term possibility as well. You can pile up that same amount depending on who he gets in maybe two fights. Two fights which can take less wear and tear out of your career and keep you going. One more fight like the first and that could be the end of your prime.

How is Ali looking today. Sure, he has money but would you rather be in his position or Hopkins?

You lose your health/mind and you can lose your money as well.

Option 2: pile up fights, less damaging fights, and make money to equal it if not gain more overall. See if you can get the big names still. Cotto, Chavez Jr, Floyd, Pac, Margarito, etc at 154.
Maybe he can get an offer from Sturm to fight in Germany. Maybe there is some money in that.

Caelum, the vast majority of people will have to work at least 30 years to make anywhere close to 1.5 million gross money before taxes, etc...

Even if Paul nets only $700 000-$800 000 after all possible expenses and taxes, that's more than 95% of people could only dream of making. I repeat, nobody ever forced these guys to choose that profession.... They could have made the average salary like the average worker if they preferred...

You think as if HBO has an automatic mandate to pay fighters millions & millions... Most of the options 2 you named still have to do with HBO allowing it to be made. He still depends on HBO and they shouldn't feel compelled to give him more than he can generate, that's all ! If he can make much in Germany...great for him...but good luck trying !!

 

Yes, and nobody can force them to fight either. Williams already fought Martinez and still has options. You have some people calling him a ***** despite him already facing off against Sergio yet what about all those that are avoiding both?

He is still looking at boxing as a career, not a one-shot fight and I'm done.

This one fight could be the end of the road for him if it is the same type of fight the first one was. He'll be done at 30. He still could have some good years left if he takes other options. That or get bigger pays hopefully down the road.

Plus, again, 1.5 for this fight but there is a possibility he could make that up in two fights against lesser opposition if the right opponents are picked. And/or, see if he can get big fights against Cotto, Margarito rematch if Margarito beats Pac, Pac fight, Floyd is still out there, Chavez jr....

HBO doesn't have to pay him anything. Hell, nobody has to pay fighters like Pac and Floyd either. Fans could just say no to their money demands. They are only worth what fans are willing to pay...this is true. However, there are still smart moves to be made to capitalize on bigger gains overall. You can't always look short-term at that level. They are in a different business that your common person.

Big Mone vs. smaller risk. But in the end, they are getting paid because the fans choose to pay them.

Williams is looking at a HUGE risk fight for 1.5 million. That fight could be his last, especially if he loses. No guarantee anything comes out of a win. He beat Maragarito, who did he get?
He beat Sergio once already, who did he get?

Sergio just beat Pavlik, who did he get...and Sergio can fight at 154-160.

Martinez has the win over Pavlik and is the man at Middleweight because of it.

50/50 and make the fight.

 

Longterm Williams needs to consider the fact that longterm if he wants to keep calling himself "feared", he needs to throw down at 50/50 for the Middleweight title and take his chances against a guy who basically fought him even the first time around. Lots on the line for the winner in this one, and I scored their first fight 114-114. If Williams doesn't fight Martinez, he'll just come out looking like a crybaby and not a "pound for pound phenom" as he'd like to be perceived.

 

If Williams can't really get up to Middleweight and feel good as NBA said, and it seems to hold true since he was 1.5 lbs away from LMW limit last time, they could we not have this fight at LMW instead.

Martinez never had any trouble making 154 sure did he?
