Yeah. His absence left a big void in the sport, if you think about some of the match-ups we could have seen from 147 to 160lbs with him in the mix.

(especially along with, while we're at it - as long as we're playing "what if" - the likes of Dmitry Pirog w/o the back injury, Maravilla w/o the bum knee & precipitous decline, Vernon Forrest w/o having been murdered, Omar Henry w/o cancer, Pavlik w/o having succumbed to John Barleycorn, etc.)

Not sure I'd make that a declarative statement with any confidence, but yeah, better case to be made than for most of the ducking accusations levied at Mayweather.

God damn has it been that long since this happened? Anyway I always like Paul he was a good fighter and a good man. Sucks what happened to him but glad he is in good spirits.

On another note, how IN THE HELL did Jim Gray win an Emmy? That guy is the worst

I'm really unhappy we didn't get to see him versus Canelo.

If memory serves, a majority of fans were favoring the ginger but it wasn't considered a sure thing by any means.

Well it would have been in the eyes of the judges considering just how favourable the cards Canelo always receives are.

I don't get Christmas cards as kind as some of the cards he's got.

...but Williams is a guy that stung Margarito a few times, and this was only a couple of years after the still-improving Canelo was jolted by Jose Cotto and bullied on the ropes early by Alfonso Gomez. It was a slim chance maybe, but the judges may have been taken outta the equation. Williams could now and then generate enough leverage to produce some MAJOR pop. (just watch the way he obliterated a full-grown natural MW in Kolle...granted a mediocre, regional-level fighter, but a natural MW nonetheless, and laid out cold)

Well that would have really been something but I can't see it. I definitely think Paul had it in him to outhustle him over 12 though. I just think he would have struggled to get a decision against someone with such backing.

I was actually going to lay a small cheeky punt on Williams by KO had it gone through, if the odds were juicy enough (and they probably would've been, enough to justify a little something-something)

    War Williams!

It would have been great to see and was a real shame for boxing to lose him like that. Obviously it's far worse for him, hence why he's the only athlete I've ever considered contacting - outside of work commitments - to send some sort of support to.

    I miss Paul.
If he were in the ring he would have whipped Golovkin's useless spine long ago.
Take Paul's heart and spine and put them in Golovkin's little body and you have,
    a half decent European fighter.

Not sure Canelo would have won that one and at the time I'd have strongly leaned towards Williams, in hindsight my thoughts aren't any different. Williams would have been a nightmare for the kid.

Man, I was so hyped about that fight! Paul's height and reach along with his punch output would have been hell for Canelo to overcome which made that fight super interesting. It's very unfortunate what happened to him. I met him back in 08 when he fought Andy Kolle I think his name was, and he took my autographed shirt to the locker room with him to sign it, and he signed it and came back out about 20 minutes later and took a picture with us!! He was a great guy, An Honest guy, and it sucks what happened to him. He was such an exciting fighter!!
