Wise move for PW, Martinez had him on ***** street numerous times. As good as Sergio is, power is not one of his highest attributes. Pavlik would take Williams out, he can give and take just as well but he's a natural MW.
Pavlik dosen't have half the speed or skill of Martinez! PW got dropped once and got up and fought a good fight!! Pavliks whole MW reign is against C and D level competition and a shutout loss against a 44 year old!! Wait till Kelly faces real competition!!!
Disappointing, but I can't blame them. Pavlik - rightly or wrongly - already ****ed them over twice. Pavlik can now concentrate on fighting the contenders coming through at 160 like Golovkin or N'Dam N'Jikam, or fight Sturm to add the WBA or move up to 168 and fight Bute.
I can understand if Williams wanted to go back down to 154, but why 147. It seems like he kill himself to keep making weight. He and Cintron would be a hell of a mathchup at 154. I don't give Kermit much of a chance at winning though.
Wiliams-Mosley coming soon. This is the only viable fight I see for Paul as of right now. Cotto won't fight him; Floyd won't fight him; Berto won't fight him-especially after Berto gets starched by Mosley. Williams simply doesn't have many options @ 147.
Twice? Goosen claims they NEVER SIGNED for Dec 5. Remember. That thread has been posted and documented here on ESB. According to Goosen, whom I personally think is lying his ass off about this one, there was never any contract for that fight! This content is protected That is behind him so what is the problem with Team Williams backing up their words for a career high pay check now? Stepping up to Pavlik and shattering his china chin? They claim it is EASY! We know the truth here. Pdub wants NONE of Kelly after what Martinez did to him.:deal
True. Just a shame Team Pavlik had to rely on somebody else to do the dirty work rather than stepping up to the plate themselves. Maybe he can now concentrate on fighting some of the guy's coming through rather than D+ level fighters or welterweights.
Yes and Mosley I think was very serious about not fighting Paul at this stage in his own career but I really think the sentiment on Paul has changed to the point where he will take the fight if he beats Berto and Williams is there for it. I don't really think Williams will be viable at 147 anymore but if they feel he just can't take the power at 160, maybe they're right to run away, even after all the smack talk. Paul eats too much leather to push it with Pavlik maybe.
he took the title from good competition. from the guy who beat bhop twice and fought to a draw with the same prime winky who was a year removed from annihilating tito (not to be confused w/ the winky who paul fought who was coming off a 21 month layoff after losing his last fight at 170). not only that but he faced good opposition coming up. not elite/great...but good competition. i hope this is just gorilla dust as boo would put it to...kind of a public negotiating tool to try and get more $$ for the fight.
Please. Kelly chose to fight Pdub for several reasons. He didn't need anyone to "do the dirty work". Take your head out of that sunless place. Again, the hand problem was REAL. It was documented. Goosen had the medical reports when he agreed to the first extension. It was a condition of getting the extension.
It's debatable whether Winky was 'primed' against Taylor, and whether Taylor was really 'elite' to begin with. I think stylistically he had the advantage over Hopkins, who I think had peaked at 160 and needed a chance of scenary. The second point is completely irrelevant. Fair enough he faced Hopkins at 170, but he lost that fight decisively, and in his own division at 160, he's wasting his prime years or has done so. Lockett, Rubio and Espino is embarassing opposition really. If he fights the likes of Sturm, N'Dam N'Jikam, Golovkin, winner of Pirog/Macklin etc, then I'll give him his dues for taking on the best around at his weight. But at the moment his opposition has been very poor. I respect that circumstances have prevented him from defending against the best to an extent, but I wish you wouldn't try and pull the cotton wool over everybodies eyes. His 160 opposition since winning the title has been woeful.
Given his height and stamina it is hard for the average welter to overcome the fact judges go more by punch volume than meaningful connects and percent connect rate.
I never said the hand problem wasn't real. What I wish you'd all do is shut up about it though, shut up about the Williams fight and Kelly should concentrate on fighting the best around at 160. You're all acting like Pavlik beat Williams himself. I got news for you, he didn't. And he's a welterweight. Why not concentrate on fighting real 160lber's and the best one's out there at it, not Lockett, Rubio and Espino. You also have to accept that Team Pavlik were very unprofessional in the build-up. Pulling out of a fight with an injury is fine, what isn't fine is rescheduling it while he was still injured and then cancelling again.
