For two years, boxing fans and critics clamored for pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. to fight rugged Mexican Antonio Margarito in a welterweight showdown. After

Carolina'sPaul Williams defeated Margarito in July 2007, fans stopped their clamoring.

For the past two months, boxing fans and critics have been itching for Mayweather to fight Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto in a welterweight unification fight. Cotto, who edged superstar Shane Mosley on November 10 via a unanimous decision, is a bruising force that most people consider Mayweather's biggest threat. In fact, many think

Rico's top pug could actually best "Money" and put the cocky star in his place.

Yet somewhere in South Carolina, Williams is laughing.

From April of 2005, when Margarito thrashed Kermit Cintron, to mid-2007 when Margarito was preparing to take on Williams, it seemed that every

website and forum had one universal topic: a potential match up between Margarito and Mayweather. Could the much smaller Mayweather handle Margarito's larger height and reach? Could Margarito cope with Mayweather's dynamic hand speed? Could Mayweather even keep his foe off of him, considering he was bullied around the ring by lightweight Jose

Castillo in 2002? The questions were endless. So when Margarito lost to the undefeated Williams in July, one would think that fans would push for a Mayweather-Williams bout, right?

    Wrong.

Fans and media practically ignored Williams' victory over Margarito. It was almost as if the mega hype regarding "The Tijuana Tornado" never happened. Although Williams controlled the twelve round bout with his fast hands and high punch output -- something that no fighter had ever done to Margarito before -- no one talked about a potential Williams-Mayweather match up. Why? The answer is simple: Williams' following isn't half that of Margarito's and Mayweather's fans know that their fighter will lose to "

    Punisher".

So now, Mayweather fans and Cotto fans are pushing for their favorite fighters to square off. One can only sigh at this ignorance. Mayweather would trash Cotto just like he did Ricky Hatton. What does Cotto have that could possibly bother Mayweather? If a 36 year old Shane Mosley could give Cotto fits with his hand speed, what would Mayweather do to him? My one wish as a fight

is for Paul Williams to get the same fan base as Cotto so there can be a clamor for a Williams-Mayweather fight.

Williams is built to blitz Mayweather. He's a 6'1 awkward southpaw who throws upwards of a thousand punches every fight. And at 33-0, his confidence is

high. Mayweather would have no way to handle Williams and his enormous frame.

Mayweather has recently claimed that money is no longer a factor in his future fights. So a fight with Williams makes all the sense in the world. If "Pretty Boy" truly wants to go down as the best in history, he will need to pass at least one more significant test. A win over Williams would shut up any remaining doubters and it would give Mayweather a victory over a true welterweight (something he's yet to achieve). Although Williams would likely win the fight, at least Mayweather could say he never backed down from a challenge.
So to all fight fans, please call for a Williams-Mayweather match. Mayweather fans will obviously be afraid to do so (after all, they don't want to see their hero get beat), so it will be up to the rest of the boxing world to make the fight happen.

If Williams is the nightmare then Cotto is the Dream Catcher. Please Williams needs to prove himself against a top guy or a rematch against Margarito and beating him decisevely. It was a close fight and Margo is in a lower lever than Cotto Shane and Mayweather.

Stylistically Cotto is all wrong for Paul Williams. Williams is not naturally a counter puncher, and does not fight well off the back foot, hence his very high punch out put. Against a shorter fighter like Cotto, who is much more effective at getting inside then Marg, he will struggle to keep him off. Once inside Cotto is at a MASSIVE advantage as his shorter and tighter punches will be much easier to land on the longer body of Williams. I would love to see this fight made because I truely believe Cotto would dominant in what would be a very exciting fight.

I've said it a million times and ill say it again: Williams isn't ready for PBF; he's still a work in progress. Right now PBF easily beats him by countering his feather punches and potentially backing him up (*gasp* at the thought of PBF backing someone else up). Right now Williams is good when he is allowed to fight his game and control the ring/tempo. A stationary Margo wasn't too tough to do that too, but PBF will obviously not allow that. 118-110 UD blowout for Floyd if he faces Williams this year.

Margarito vs Williams style wise will aways be a close fight.

Mayweather vs Williams style wise is a ****ing nightmare for Floyd. Floyd doesn't have the size, power or workrate to just easily beat Williams. Williams arkward style and his great size, reach and amazing workrate just doesn't fit right for Floyd.

How does Floyd get in on that 82 inch reach???

Oh and Floyd ain't back Williams up. Paul ain't ****ing Ricky Hatton. Floyd would have to get inside and take chances against Williams and I don't think he's prepared to do that.

Marg and PBF are very very different fighters. Stylistically Williams provides a lot of problems for Mayweather. Mayweather would have to be extremely effective in his defence to win this fight. Because of the reach of Williams, the southpaw stance and the high punch out put this fight is an extremely difficult one for Floyd to win. Floyd virtually will be unable to pot shot, and will be forced to stand his ground, and use effective defence to negate the shots of Williams, and land his own crisp counters.

Williams has shown against Marg that he is more then ready for any of boxings elite. He doesn't need to match the experience of Floyd to beat him. He has already been tested in the spot light and has come up with the goods.
