Fellas, I thought this big welterweight named Paul Williams was gonna be the next Tommy Hearns when I first saw him fight in 2005... I admit, he was wild and a tad crude back then; however, since then, he has settled down on his punches and has polished up his skills to a certain degree, yet, something is still missing from his arsenal.... My guess is, a BOOMING right hand and a SNAPPY long left jab..... Paul Williams can throw those two punches pretty good, but nowhere near the level or degree of a prime Tommy Hearns at 147 or 154 pounds.... Cheers.... MR.BILL:bbb
Kellerman hugs more nuts than a squirrel. Williams isn't even close to Hearns. Hearns not only had great power, he had tremendous movement, ring smarts, and boxing skills. Hearns is an ATG. Williams is not .
How the hell did "Mad" Max Kellerman get his HBO job? I know he's the future, since Larry Merchant is damn near 77 yrs old, but is Kellerman the real deal??:blood MR.BILL P.S. Bob Papa will replace Jim Lampley in the next few years, as well..... Both Papa and Kellerman are being groomed for the top slots on Prime-Time HBO boxing.... Its coming......:yikes
I agree with the thread title. Williams is very good, but that comparison is a joke, and frankly, disrespectful to the great Tommy Hearns.
They just took him from ESPN as the ''new'' Merchant I guess,he ain't so bad recently,I actually like him except the nuthugging. He did a great job at Diaz vs Katsidis ripping at the judges.I abstain at Papa,he is decent nothing more.
1. He's a southpaw so it would be a snappy long right jab ad a booming left hand. 2. He isn't Tommy Hearns but who the **** is?? He doesn't try to be like Hearns and the only reason why they are compared is there height. 3. Williams might not have the speed, skills and power of Hearns but he makes up for it with a great chin, huge workrate and great stamina all things Tommy Hearns lacked. 4. He might not have the power to lay out top 10 fighters(although he did against Quintana) but he has enough power to hurt guys and make them respect what he throws. I've never seen Verno Phillips broken down like that before ever. Phillips might not be a great fighter but he's a good vet that is a tough mother ****er and if the fight wasnt stopped when it was Williams would have dropped and stopped him in a round or two.
I go way back with HBO---1982 to be exact.... I have noticed over the years how the network has "UPPED" its game.... Back in the 80's, I thought Barry Tompkins, Larry Merchant & Ray Leonard were "Held-Back" by the network from making any real critical statements or judgement calls... However, by the 1990's, it seemed that Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant became much more loose with their tongue's... I LIKE IT TOO!!! This is boxing... Boxing is a rough sport...... Its suppose to have an "R" rating...... I never liked Walt Disney "G" rated productions.... They are just too wimpy for me.... Peace... MR.BILL
Very true... My blunder..... Despite the difference in stance, many folks were PUMPING up Williams, and, placing his name next to Tommy Hearns' name a while ago... For a brief moment, I ate it up, but not anymore....:bart MR.BILL
