Paul Williams beat Antonio Margarito, Shamba Mitchell, Carlos Quintana, Walter Matthysse, and Terrance Cauthen at Welterweight
I know for a fact he can make 147. And which top fighter at 147 do yu think should call him out? The same ones he has been begging to fight for the past three years?
Considering The Ring has him ranked #2 at MW, how long would it take him to get to be Shane or Pac's mandatory? The damned orgs would LOVE the thought of his potential income. I really don't get it with what they are doing with Paul. Seriously. Had he stayed at 147 none of these guys could have ducked him this long without vacating.
I agee with this somewhat. Even if Paul did beat the mandatories I still see Paul as NOT an attractive fight for anyone of the top WWs. He's not a big enough name and presents a lot of risk. I understand why no one at the top of 147 wanted to take that chance....high risk...low reward.
Exactly. Make some fights. I don't blame Williams. He's wanted the big names at WW. They just haven't wanted him.
Well his fans said he wasnt a WW when Quintana whooped him. they kept blaming it on the weight. NOw they say he is a WW even though he hasnt fought there in almost 2 years. If he could make the weight then he would make it and keep fighting there and eventually he could get a big fight. But he obviously cant keep making 147 so he moved up. PW is all about talk. Thats the reason i dont like him. Always talks about wanting to fight the best bla bla bla but everyone wants that. Big money duh. But he isnt willing to do the work in the ring just thinks that by running his mouth its good enough.
The things is, his star would continue to rise. Depending on the fights of course. HBO looked to be interested in working with him as well (Thanks to the Hayman connection). It was more a matter of "I want the star power and glory NOW" in my opinion. Of course, he could have dropped the WBO belt and get ranked by one of the other orgs. Worked for Margatito.
Why does anyone need to call him out? How about going to 147 and GETTING RANKED and earning it. Dude's like 2-1 against Ring ranked WW's. Not exacxtly impressive.
I can see that too. I think that a lot of people got in his ear after beating Marg and got the title of "MOST AVOIDED" fighter and he ran with it.....which caused him to seek challenges outside of the division where he could get more money. I don't know if it all worked out...he got some decent wins at 154 and 160 but if Paul really wants to fight at WW he needs to stick around and clean it out so he can FORCE the bigger names to face him.
I think Goosen actually did him a disservice with all that winning the "Most Avoided" belt. I agree with you on the rest. If he can make 147, prove it. Fight Cintron there. He said he'd like the fight at 147 anyway. However if he goes and beats a can at 147, won't do anything to help. What hurt him also was his challengin bigger names. Said he'd fight Hopkins, but Allen Green was too big. And said james Kirkland was too unknown in a bit of irony there. Love to see him vs., Angular.
Stop listening to his fans, and listen to him and his trainer. He never made any excuses after the Quintana fight. he never said anything exept Quintana never let him get in rhythm. And he said he would go back to the drawing board and do better. And he did. And he never moved up because he couldn't make weight. He moved up because none of the other belt holders at 147 would fight him. (Cotto, Shane, Berto, Margarito for the rematch, etc.)
Who else should he have fought after beating margarito, and then rematching and beating Quintana? Floyd said no. Shane said no. Cotto said no. Margarito said no. Cintron said no at the time. Zab said no. Berto wasn't ready. A lot of people have criticized Floyd for ducking Shane, Margarito, and Cotto. Why can't people see that some of these same "ducked" fighters have done some ducking of their own. If it's not OK for Floyd to do it because of fame and money as an excuse, then why is it OK for Cotto, Margo, and Shane to do it???
He could have fought his mandatories NBA. Like other champs do. Or dropped the WBO belt and see who says yes. He had HBO behind him. That means money. Think it would be too hard to get a fight with someone who's unknown but good? He just could not get the big name fights he wanted.
That is it in a nutshell. HBO. They would have forced the fights just like the forced Williams into the Pavlik fight. From all I've read HBO did have to get involved to make that happen.
I think that what Lance is saying that he didn't pay all of the dues that would warrant one of the bigger names to take a chance with Paul.
