I didn't see the fight, but how do you beat a punching machine like Williams on points? Was it an off night for Williams or what?
IMO he took Quintana lightly...He did even spar with any southpaws in his preparation for Quintana...He thought it was going to be a walk in the park and paid a costly price for it.
Williams didn't look like the fighter he has lately, but Quintana beat him by moving and counterpunching. Williams wasn't able to get off with 100 punches a round the way he normally does and he was walking into straight left hands. Some people thought the whole "I had a bad night" saying was an excuse, but I believe him. Quintana layed one pf the blueprints which can still be used imo, but now it'll be much harder to pull it off with Williams getting better and better.
It was a good win for Quintana. I hate when people say he got lucky. Getting a UD over 12 rounds is NOT luck. If anything Williams win is more about luck. What's more reasonable a KO1 win being luck or a UD12 being luck? Still, Williams wasn't lucky he just steamrolled him.
It looked like an off night by Williams (he was only throwing about 60 - 70 punches a round rather than the usual 90 - 110), plus Quintana just came in with a great strategy and fought the perfect fight, waiting for Williams to flurry and then punishing him with counters. He was also getting caught on the ropes a ton, not using his reach advantage to keep Quintana off of him. Either way, I think Williams has improved considerably since that fight. He sits on his punches better, and he uses his size better, and he's improved his defense as well.
I'll never forget the way paul looked in the corner after round 6 and on. he was getting thoroughly outclassed and couldnt do anything about it. his eyes seemed empty in between rounds.
Williams was just drawing out his combos too much. He kept throwing when he should have been moving away. Carlos just kept countering.
It was clearly an off night and it he was vindicated in the rematch. The fight wasnt a white wash, Quintana won a close but clear decision.
Williams had no answers for Quintanamo's counter lefts. None. We all saw how the second fight turned out though.
He countered Williams and deterred him. Williams work rate was neutralized. I suspect Pavlik will also have success in neutralizing his work rate, only it will be through power punching rather than counter punching. :smoke
