Paulie Ayala was a masterful example of an inside fighter

A beautiful fluid inside combination puncher. Closed the distance with quick feet and a hard guard. Not a big puncher but was always there to mix it up with a rock hard chin. He could jab and had upper torso movement - in short he is as finesse an inside fighter as you will see. He always seems to get inside rather subtly. He doesn't use the traditional double jab left, reckless charging forward or brute strength - he is all timing and footwork something rare for a lot of inside guys. His reflexes on counter punching inside his opponents punches in the pocket are very good.

I'm surprised he doesn't get more mention for his skills. He is a textbook example of how a shorter fighter can play the inside game in a calculating manner.

I always liked Paulie and was very interested in his two victories over Johnny Tapia. He seemed to be wolfbane...kryptonite to the then unbeaten Tapia, although I know those fights were rather close.
