It was a reasonably close fight but even weight drained almost to death Cotto landed the far more significant shots and busting Paulie up bad. Scored it something like 115-113 or 116-112 maybe. A lot harder for Cotto than everyone thought but i think it says a lot that in his next fight he moved up in weight and looked much much better.
116-111 for Cotto at worst. The first round was clearly a Cotto round. The bulk of Malignaggi's shots were picked off by Cotto's gloves, outside of a few clubbing right hands and jabs. In the opening seconds Cotto lands a hard right hand, that I believe initially drew blood from Paulie's left eye and worsened by the head butt. At one point in a clinch, Cotto lands a left hook to the body and left hook to the head that snaps Paulie's head back. Then a few seconds later he lands two consecutive left uppercuts. Towards the end of the round there was sequence where Cotto tries to set up a combo using a jab to the body and jab to the head, that forces Paulie to attempt a clinch and fall to the floor. I think this is a round where Paulie threw more shots. But the clean blows were coming from Cotto. Physically, Cotto was at his worst in that fight. He was gassed by round five, and began fighting in spurts. That night, his biggest problem wasn't Paulie, but his gas tank. Had it not been for troubles at the scales, I don't think Paulie lasts more than 8 rounds. While at the same time, if that version of Cotto from the Malignaggi fight showed up against Corley, Torres, Abdullaev, or even Bailey, I think he would have been KO'd.
