And show me one fighter the caliber of Pavlik that this has worked for with AA? You can shell up against the Ayala's of the world and get away with it. But Pavlik? :huh
Kelly picks his punches better and is used to a high work rate. Again, we are talking about a different caliber of opponent here. Also one that doesn't have to be in AA's wheel house when he gets him in the corner.
It will definitely be more dangerous against Pavlik, which is why i think he will spend much more time boxing then covering up but if when he does cover up, the only opening Kelly will have is on the side of the body. I just have a hard time seeing anyone breaking his will, i mean this is a man who fought about 6 rounds with a broken jaw and wasn't even thinking about quitting.
That's plain wrong! Abraham was intelligent enough to sell his injury to the ref and wanted the fight to end in the 5th round. Sure, he wanted to win but tried the easy way out - when he realised, that that ain't the way it was meant to be (and lose the title on a technical), he dig deep and said "let's fight, I ain't no loser to that boi!". That shows you some intelligence and afterwards fighting spirit but not the other way around!
Miranda is faster than Kelly and Abraham can see when the punches are coming. The only problem Abraham will have is if he is in that shell for too long and lets Kelly out work him but he has studied Pavlik, he should know how to neutralize his punches. I serious doubt with Kelly's defense, he will be able to eat Abraham's punches for 12 rounds. He will be getting hit a lot more in this fight.
On one hand you say Kelly will stick to what got him here, coming forward. What makes you think AA won't do the same? Laying in the corner against heavy punchers? AA acknowledged before the second Miranda fight he would have to come out of his shell more in the states, but he didn't do that UNTIL Miranda was hurt. Pipe has pointed out that Jermain Taylor would explode off of the ropes in his first fight with Kelly, so this isn't going to be something new for Kelly. AA may have more 'punch' but Taylor was faster and doesn't suffer from the same reach disadvantage AA will have.
I actually forgot about him trying to end the fight mid rounds, that still doesn't mean he was thinking about quitting. That means he was thinking about winning in an easier way. Either way he didn't quit, and he fought the other half of the fight with his jaw broken and didn't even go down.
Well, as I have already stated, Taylor was faster than AA coming off the ropes. Will AA come off the ropes when he is under serious assault? Kelly's defense is the most under rated part of his game. It may be because of his much doubted chin. Kelly admits to getting hit ONCE by Lockett. To him only ONE punch that landed mattered. He is willing to take shots that don't hurt him (in the sense of stunned). He has shown his ability to survive when he does get hurt. Kelly takes punches at the end of someone's reach because they simply don't matter to him. The snap is not there. AA will be at a reach disadvantage. He will let AA land a punch that has about an inch of travel left because it doesn't matter to him.
I said that about Abraham. I also said that Pavlik SHOULD do what got him here and bring pressure, and earlier in this thread i stated that i feel he won't bring pressure until late when he knows that he is at a technical disadvantage. Also, you couldn't find a more different style than Taylor and Abraham. Taylor has serious defensive flaws that was exploited by smaller boxer like Ouma, Spinks, and Wright. I always knew that he would run into problems against a puncher and i choose Kelly to beat him in their first fight( and why he is avoiding Froch and i why i favor Froch if they ever fight). Abraham went into a shell against Miranda because he had him right where he wanted him and he knew that his power would effect him, and having already fought Miranda, that gave him experience. Pavlik gives much more openings and is more easier to hit IMO.
When Kelly would get hurt by AA at one point, he won't be able to survive like he did vs Taylor, when he clinched for some time this round and Taylor wasn't able to exploit how to break those and get out to dish out some effective punching. Abraham WOULD for sure break those clinches and deliver the punishment, cause he know how to do it. Strengthwise, he has an advantage and all Pavlik fans would find out when they are gonna fight...
Huge difference there. When Jermaine was on the ropes in first fight with Pavlik, he was wide open and his hands was too his chest. Abraham keeps a high enough guard where he is protecting both his head and the middle of the chest. He then comes off of the ropes and at times and boxes in the middle of the ring when the time is right and also steals rounds. IMO Kelly has not fought a puncher nor finisher like Abraham. Hes not only accurate, but he is very precise and creative with his choices of punches when he has an opponent hurt. Watch when he finished Miranda. He faked a right hand and threw a wide left hook and caught him with it. Another thing is that in Aurthur, Kelly won't be dealing with someone who burns himself out swinging wilds when he gets someone hurt the way Taylor did in their first fight. I seen Taylor, Hopkins, and Miranda hitting Kelly almost at will and i have all of those fights. Taylor hurt him with a left hook flush, Hopkins staggered him with a left hookercut and Miranda landing anything he wanted to, and Kelly's face after the fight showed it. Hes not great defensively, but to his credit he does take a good punch. I just think that him taking punches against a sharp accurate dangerous puncher like Abraham is not a good idea.
You think Kelly is more open and easier to hit than Edison, heavy bag, Miranda? :huh Loew takes a lot of heat on this board, but do you really think they go into this fight with the same game plan they had against Miranda? Bully the Bully? Yeah, he was easier to hit in that fight, but it did show Kelly can take a punch. I would have to think that they would have a much different plan for this fight, like "fight at range". But, if you follow jsimps posts, you can be reasonably assured the Pavlik camp thinks this happens in June. So we will probably find out. :thumbsup
pavlik's fighting rubio next, right? I think I will watch that fight and see if pavilk makes any stylistic adjustments before making any solid predictions
To be honest, I think both guys are probably equally strong. It just equates differently. I don't think either guy carries an ounce of fat on them come fight day. Kelly keeps his punches shorter, even when finishing, because of his discipline based on lack of speed versus some opponents. Even finishing Taylor, he kept his swings short. AA was lunging and looping. Yeah, more damage IF connected.
Does he have too against Rubio? I don't think so. And if he does train on some different things, does he show them in the Rubio fight if he doesn't have too? Probably not.
