As recently as last Friday I would have agreed with most of this. However, over the week end I watched quite a bit of video of both Martinez and Pavlik, and watched it while asking myself, "How does KP use his advantages to take advantage of Sergio's flaws?" In my opinion Martinez's lack of defensive accumen will cost him big. Put that with the fact that pressure troubles him a great deal, and it's not good news for the Martinez fans or Pavlik haters.
I think Sergio will pace himself and fight at a much more measured pace during his second fight at middleweight. He is a very good fighter and is very underrated by most...even after seeing the Paul Williams fight. And your right...he does resemble a latin Joe Calzaghe.
Pressure only seem to trouble him when he's fatigued. Against War Puto, he looked very comfortable before tiring at/around the 10th round or so. I think you'll be surprised with the performance of Martinez. He'll lose but look very tough and durable in doing so. Pavlik's MW KO streak ends with Martinez in my opinion.
Good point about the pace of the fight, but there's more than one man in the ring. I think KP will come in looking to impose a rough and fast fight on Martinez. It's not all up to Sergio.
Come on. I like Martinez too, but a level above JT? In his prime? People tend to forget how good Taylor was a few years back. He hasn't been the same for a few years now, being prone to the KO, but before that he was a good MW champ. Prime for prime JT KO's Martinez IMO.
Here's how it works on ESB. Taylor and Miranda both lost to Pavlik, therfore, both a scrubs. I already ask one poster to provide video of Martinez beating Hopkins twice, or, like Miranda, giving AA the toughest fight of his career. Taylor and Miranda were both very good middleweights. Martinez is completely unproven above 154.
Both also lost to Abraham and you considered them scrubs for it. Didn't you also claim Abraham was so scared of Pavlik he had to move up to the super middleweight division and join that tournament JUST to stay away from Pavlik while being forced in the mix with the likes of Taylor, Dirrell, Froch, Kessler and Ward. Not to forget the other top fighters in the division which aren't in the tournament, guys like Bute, Green, Andrade, your #1 ATG Zuniga and others. You are a failed clown.
Pavlik should beat Martinez but an upset wouldn't be out of the question. Ultimately, I think Pavlik will grind Martinez down, I don't know if he ko's Martinez but he should get the win in a good fight. After this fight Pavlik needs to face Williams if he plans on staying at 160. Pavlik is the champion and its on his end to face his top contenders. He has a weak title run so far, failed to get his former top contender Abraham in the ring, then pulled out twice on his current top contender in Williams. If Pavlik is going to be the middleweight champ he needs to get Williams in the ring in 2010.
Pavlik is fighting Martinez because Dan Goosen demanded a 50/50 co-promotion. Unless Goosen backs off that demand, Pavlik/Williams will never happen. When was the last time Arum gave another promoter 50% control of a fight card that featured a Top Rank world champion in the main event?
