Pavlik and Cotto have to follow some sort of boxing pattern and put a lot of heart and personal touch to it, who doesn't use some kind of model and develop their game throughout their pro careers nowadays? There are a lot of professional fighters out there who are essentially driven by their high level of technical skill and strategical expertize rather than on fighting heart and crude punching power alone, I would consider the former "pure" boxers ( Floyd, Bernard, Calzaghe, Guzman, Spinks, Mosley, Williams, Judah, Forrest, J.M. Marquez, Klitschko, et cetera) and the later "pure" punchers ( Cotto, Pavlik, Juan Diaz, Berto, Hatton, Cintron, Margarito, Barrera, Pacquiao, Darchynian, R. Marquez, I. Vazquez, Peter, et cetera ) but so do most others. Cotto's boxing skills are definitely underrated but that's cause he always lets himself be driven by his physicallity than anything else, but he's slow getting off alright... Cutting the ring off is not what I could consider a great technical skill but rather a strategical benefit to his game just like Floyd's ring generalship is to his exceptional footwork, but Cotto has the feet coordination to make it ( retreating and circling against Abdullaev or persuing against Pinto)... I don't buy that one that he adjusts smoothly to his opponent and I feel the main reason he switches from conventional to southpaw stance is cause he knows he has punching power in both arms and may rest the left lead sometimes ( just like Iron Mike in the days), giving the impression he has a right jab and is ambidextrous ( like against Zab)... He's a very good combination puncher when he connects to the body and lets his punches fly and follow up to the head, that makes up a great deal for less than his impressive handspeed ( not deceivingly fast, I wouldn't put that way) ... Yes, he is the best body puncher out there no doubts about it, but quite too often, he goes straight to the body, leans his head down and opens up upstairs, that's what I consider the great flaw in that mediocre defense but as you pointed out, both he and Pavlik are willing to take to give in return... Most of his opponents have given up fighting him cause they couldn't take his physicallity and his punching power such as Bailey, Abdulaev, Branco and Urkal, the rest were waisted ( including Malignaggi) - In fact, the only fight I can remember of, in which Cotto fought cautiously and with a "pure" boxing approach was against Lovemore N'Dou cause this african guy was simply menacing at the time, no doubts Miguel will not be taking that approach next month, he will go "purely" for the kill and I believe he'll be out-punched, hurt and out-scored. Don't find any similarities whatsoever between Jermain and Shane but I'm interested to see where Miguel's strength and heart can take him in this situation, I have been surprised before...
Pavlik is certainly relentless for the 6-8 rounds his fights last. I've seen Cotto go medeval and stay that way for 10 or 12 rounds. Kelly, who I like a lot, has not been tested anywhere near the way Cotto has. What Cotto IS Kelly is still trying to BECOME. I think he will, but only time will tell. Boo
