It wasnt so much the loss it was more that he looked completely out of ideas. Hatton had only one loss to the P4P #1 but him and Graham parted ways because there was very little that Billy could add to his game from there on in. Kelly could be the same, another trainer could add to his skills and turn him into a monster. I'm not saying Leow cant, just that he hasnt proved that he can.
Kelly was his own worst enemy in the Hopkins fight. What can you do different when you have no snap on your punches. The biggest thing Loew could have done was stop the fight from happening because of the bronchitis and elbow issue. The rest is speculation. Kelly is making changes in this camp. Trainer won't be one of them, so let's just see what happens. How many people starting and perpetuating these threads are really in a position to make this decision? Think about it. Pick any trainer you want for me and guess what? I'll still be **** in the boxing ring.
Team Pavlik has the kind of stability and continuity that most fighters can't even dream of having. Jack and Kelly have been together since Kelly was 9 years old. Miguel diaz has been in Kelly's corner since his very first pro fight. Under Jack's tutelage Kelly racked up 89 amature wins against only 9 losses, and won multiple national champioships. Jack, Miguel, and Cameron Dunkin developed Kelly from an ordinary looking prospect, who got booted out of the 2000 Olympic trials by Jermain taylor, into a monster who ran over Taylor in 7 rounds. Someone told Kelly to use hooks and upper cuts against Zuniga, someone told him to sneak a lead right up under McKart's elbow, someone told him to just beat the **** out of Zertuche, someone formulated the plan to keep Miranda on his back foot, someone told Kelly to quit swing wildly and measure with the jab in Taylor I, and someone guided Kelly to a UD victory over one of the best versions of Jermain Taylor we've ever seen. And guess what, there were no so called "elite trainers" present on any of those occassions. When KP lost to Hopkins it was his first loss in nine and a half years. In the immediate aftermath I was one of the first to jump on the "dump Jack Leow" band wagon. When I learned of the elbow injury and bronchitis I developed a different point of view. The elbow injury and bronchitis have been throroughly documented by independent parties, including Thomas Hauser. The illness and injury did not cause the loss. Bernard fought a brilliant, near perfect, fight. That's what caused the loss. However, the miserble performance by KP was caused by the physical problems. You can't blame that on Leow. Jack, Miguel, and Mike Pavlik SR, tried multiple times to get Kelly to post pone. He would not hear of it. Jack tried to do the right thing, but his fighter was busy thinking with his balls instead of his brain.
Nice comments. I agree with all of this except the part about Frazier and Futch. I thought Frazier was good enough to go all the way regardless. His style was just a burnout style which does not last long like Tysons. The problem with Hatton and the chin is that once a strong chinned guy gets stopped he usually gets stopped easier. That is my fear with Hatton and Margarito also. Then of coarse if Hatton is stopped earlier by Pac, people will say well I guess Floyd's win was not that great. That is another topic though. If a fighter is beaten for the first time, is that the best win for his opponent. Was Hagler's win over Hearns not as great as Leonard's over Hearns? Anyway, I am off topic again. I like you post. Great.
