Pavlik wouldn't land a finger on Joe Pavlik's punches are so predictable to a guy like Calzaghe he might as well send him a fax everytime he's about to throw a punch.
I think that a Calzaghe-Pavlik fight would be a great one. Both men have an incredible workrate, one is a much slicker boxer and one has brute force. A couple of reasons why I think it will be much more of a fight than just a Calzaghe boxing showcase. One and probably the biggest is that at a higher weight, Pavlik will get his legs back and not be such a stationary target. Watch a couple of his early fights and his fights at higher weights, he is moving more and his power is definitely increased as well. Regardless of what people say about his chin, he can take a punch. The one time he was hurt against Taylor was beacuse of an equilibrium shot, similar to spinning around in a circle a bunch and then walking, he was fully aware of everything the whole time but couldn't get his legs under him, and when he did, he started fighting back winning the end of the round and dominating the following. THe other times he got knocked down, one was a slip, stepped on by a southpaw, and te other was just an off balance shot that didn't even phase him. The other thing that helps him is getting back to fighting quick boxers like Taylor not straight ahead power guys like Miranda. Once he adapted to Taylors style and got accustomed to his speed, he started to control the fight, so don't say Pavlik can't adapt in the ring either. As for Calzaghe, you don't stay a champ for 10 years if you aren't special. While he isn't always exciting, he always finds a way to win. He is a slick boxer and his hand speed and craftiness are superior to almost everyone in boxing. I enjoyed watching his display against Kessler. Kessler did have some success though but Calzaghe adaption to his style made him be able to take over the fight and easily outpoint Kessler. I'll admit that I haven't gotten to see that many of Calzaghe's fights but the man is remarkable. I think he easily beat Hopkins purely on punch output. Fight outcome - While I would like to see Pavlik fight a couple more slick boxers before getting in the ring with JC, there really aren't many more out at middleweight worth his time right now. Pavlik defintely wants to defend his middleweight titles though and isn't looking to move up in weight yet. However, the big factor is money, and it would be a huge payday for both men. I don't see a bigger fight for Calzaghe to go out on and one he will definitely be favored in and deservedly so. I can see the fight being won by either men. I think if it goes the distance, Calzaghe in England will win by a close decision, and maybe even controversial. Pavliks best chance is to win is by knockout but even a close loss doesn't hurt his stock at all. It will be one of the best fights because both fighters are determined to keep their undefeated record and I wouldn't be surprised to see both men get off the canvas. Pavliks workrate, heart and power against JC's workrate, style, and speed. What an incredible fight this could be.
Great to see a post that gives due respect to both fighters. They are both special and history will be a lot kinder to them than some of contemporary assessments that seem to be based in the idea that fighters of past eras were by definition better. Pavlik is young and for his age more accomplished than several MW greats at the same age. He might go down as a true ATG middleweight. Galzaghe is just a tad too good for him IMO.
sorry but JC is to immobile for pavlik. he would not get hit as much as pavlik is used to hitting people. pavlik could pull it off and it would be a great fight but personally. calzaghe UD
I think Pavlik can carry the weight well, though his game -- pressure from the outside -- could be compromised a bit. Still, I think Pavlik would have more success there than Jermain Taylor. I'd pick Andrade to beat JT.
No you simply don't know what an iron chin is. An iron chin is Oliver McCall, David Tua, Wayne McCullogh etc. It is not someone who has been down to three different fighters, twice to single shots and on the third occasion almost out on his feet and stopped by an average puncher. He does not have a glass jaw, in fact I think his chin is decent enough not a major worry by any means. But it is a long long way from being iron.
Pavlik is not even on Joes level. He is just a straight ahead guy. very effective but against a master boxer witha granite chin no way! I wish this fight would happen to shut up all you Pavlik lovers. You act like he's an ATG already. He has a long way to go. He has only taken the first step to get there. Beating Taylor. Zertuche and Miranda were just chumps.
Even though I think Pavliks style is perfect for Joe Calzaghe, I do beleive this is one of the best fights fir him. Pavlik is exciting, and has a lot of fans and he is young. Hopkins is a lot older and the win will be dismissed im guessing a win over a young champion though cannot be dismissed. After Calzaghe defeates Hopkins, I really hope this fight is made.
I'd love Joe to fight Pavlik, he is my number 1 choice once Hopkins is retired The guy has no defence. He would be completely schooled. Lacyed. I think he'd be slapped to a stoppage in the mid to late rounds, much to the suprise of many Yanks
Kessler couldn't drop JC with clean, flush power shots, so how the hell would Pavlik beat Joe? This thread is laughable. Joe would smash Pavlik into the cheap seats. I like Kelly, btw, he's a good guy and a decent fighter, but to say he's better than Joe Calzaghe is a HUUUUUGE statement to make and very unrealistic. OK, so you may (for some bizarre reason) dislike JC, but let's be realistic and take our heads out of our asses here. Agreed.
