Pavlik beats Martinez & moves up to SMW. Whom should he fight in his first 2 fights?

I think he should fight someone like Balzsay and then take on Bute (assuming both Pavlik and Bute remain unbeaten at the weight).

    Thoughts?

Balzsay has lost his last two fights?

Don't know why he wouldn't go straight for Bute.

Paul Williams called out Bhop and Joe Calzaghe. Both LHW's. So Paul could just go up to SMW and fight Pavlik. No problem.

Seriously, I hate to see him go after Bute straight off myself but this next fight is a setup double header. Stieglitz would be a better option, not sure that is available though.

Tune-up fight (Balzsay is a fairly technical SP) and accommodating to the weight. It would be great if he went for Bute straight away, wouldn't it, but Pavlik hasn't faced that many SPs... and after fighting guys like Martinez, Rubio, etc... Bute might be too much of a stretch for a first fight at SMW. No?

Pavlik's problem imo is that HBO paid him ridiculous money after he beat Taylor and now he has an inflated view of his worth. I don't necessarily mean that as a criticism, but I think it's a leigitimate comment. That means that fights against non-USTV friendly belt holders are financially almost impossible to actually make.

Personally I think that Bute will be too much of a stretch for Pavlik at any point. Can see your argument, I wouldn't be suprised if there was no tune up though.

Maybe, but Bute is open to right hands, and Pavlik can throw some nice, straight right hands, Bute doesn't have much of a jab, whereas Pavlik does... and that means Pavlik could control the centre of the ring, especially because Bute doesn't have an inside game... and if Pavlik manages to push Bute against the ropes with his 1-2, and can tag Bute big, flush, things might get interesting...

As you said in another thread, Pavlik is now underrated by most people after being overrated for a long time... He wasn't himself during the Hopkins fight (but Hopkins would have beaten any version of Pavlik anyway), whereas Bute looked great in his last fight, but what careful observers have noticed was that Andrade still made him very uncomfortable and that Bute's defence still leaves a lot to be desired...

    ...just sayin'...

Yes yes. I like Bute a lot and rate him highly, but the opponents he's beaten are not that good and that means there's a reasonable chance my assessment is wrong. Pavlik is better than anyone Bute has faced before. When you're assessing someone against an opponent that's better than any previous ones, the chance that your opinion will be erroneous is always higher.

Seems like Kelly and Jack think they have a shot against Bute. They probably see some things that they at least think they could exploit.

The problem with this argument is that Bute and his team also think they have a great shot against Pavlik...

All this should make for a great fight; I really hope Pavlik/Arum will sign on the dotted line, if they both win on the 17th.

Pavlik is better in many ways than Andrade, but in some significant ways, he is not. In all honesty, I wouldn't bet against Andrade to beat Pavlik even though Pavlik has the style that superficially would give him a great advantage over Andrade (see Kessler). The reason is that Andrade's greatest problem is with angles, movement, fast counterpunching... not with a fighter coming straight at him, throwing straight punches. I am sure Pavlik is a better fighter p4p than Andrade, but I think Andrade might just be a better SMW than Pavlik.

I was very careful to word that as an observation, not an argument from my perspective. Roach/Richardson saying it would become my argument. :D Loew? Not enough of a stable to know his match making abilities. I've said this before, when he did a local TV interview after Pav/Hop was announced, you could see in his face he wasn't happy about the fight.

Win or lose, it would be a cracking fight that should make both fighters more respected and popular world-wide. I hope this fight gets made. I don't think it would be the end of the world for either fighter if he lost this fight.
