Not since Lacy have Americans so quickly abandoned a previously overhyped boxer. I can remember when this kind of post was the rarity, whereas "Pavlik should be above PBF in the p4p rankings" was all over the place. If Pavlik was British, we'd be going on about him even if he got Hattonbuckled against Hopkins!

It's probably that the US has so many good boxers that it's easy to support whoever is doing well at a given time, whereas British (and general European) posters have to treasure even vaguely decent boxers like squirrels with nuts.

    Pavlik is ****ing ridiculous

"Why would I be in that tournament when I'm a Middleweight" - didn't stop him fighting Hopkins at 170 or chasing Calzaghe for a fight at 168 when Calzaghe was campaigning in the 170s.

Sucks to be stuck with Arum, is what it comes down too.

I disagree. Generally for you guys to rank a boxer, he has to perform something at the highest level.

You ranked Calzaghe only after the Lacy fight.
You ranked Hatton only after the Tszyu fight.
You ranked Haye only after the Maccarenelli fight.

Here, we're so prone to thinking any new fighter is the next Tito/Oscar/Tyson that we create expectations that are unfair on the fighter themselves

Especially in a case like Lacy or Pavlik where for all of the excitement they bring to fights, they have huge flaws that master boxers can pick apart.

In the case of Lacy, I feel his career was ruined not by the Calzaghe fight, but the hype leading up to it where he honestly felt he was unbeatable, he didn't even see Calzaghe as a threat and that was due to his camp telling him as much.

Hbo dont think much of Pavlik they want him to split $2mill with Sturm. Obviously he has turned them down so where does he go now?

True, but when there have been likable boxers (Frank Bruno is the most infamous example) British posters will cling onto them through thick-and-thin.

Say what you like about Klit-huggers, but they've stuck by Vitali and Wlad through some very tought times.

True, though the Latino fans have a great history of boxers yet only seem to expect courage on the part of their boxers. Gatti lost all the time and yet his army of followers could conquer the Americas.

Yeah, Lacy's problem was his power. People were calling him the next Tyson!

On the other hand, Eddie Chambers has never had much hype, but had never had much hate, because he's a boxer (and not even a flashy one like Ali or RJJ) rather than a puncher.

    Exhibition fights at Klan rallies.

Kelly (The Ghost) Pavlik VS Clem ( No Toof) Burke.

Eddie Chambers is getting bigtime hype now and was being hyped previously until the loss to Povetkin, he'll have no fans when he inevitably loses to a Klitschko.

Klitschko have two fighters who have for the last 6 years at least, not had any incidents that really damage them as fighters, Wlad has been unbeatable since Sam Peter and Vitali with the exception of the cut on his eye, has looked just as good.

People don't mind if you lose competitively (Gatti) but they'll loathe you if you lose on a one sided beatdown (Lacy)

So, are you saying all world titlists should forget about manadatory obligations, or are you say guys like Rubio should NEVER be allowed to earn a title shot? Those are the only choices you leave yourself with your Rubio/Lockett comments.

Furthemore, your on this sight everyday, and you do keep up with the news, so what exactly is your motive for mentioning Mora? I KNOW that you KNOW Pavlik damn near left Top Rank over the Mora crap. Critisizing Pavlik for the fact that Arum tried to get him to fight Mora, and Pavlik refused, just makes you look stupid.

5 years ago Wlad got beat by Brewster (considered a journeyman at the time) but his fans stuck to him.

4 years ago, Vitali left the sport in embarassing circumstances, but his fans pined for him and came out in force even though it seemed likely that Peter would beat him.

The tournament is the best thing for boxing. Guaranteed good fights. Those guys in the tournament are doing a great thing. I give them all credit.
