Pavlik blasts SM tournament

A lot of people have the notion that the Hopkins fight was all about chasing Calzaghe, but that is incorrect. Goosen pulled Williams out because of a spat over money. Winky turned down $1.4 million and a cut of the PPV money. HBO refused a Rubio fight, at that point Sturm wouldn't even talk about it, and Abraham had a mandatory with Marquez coming up. Hopkins made a call, issued the challenge, HBO guaranteed $3 million each, and it was on.

 

I never heard the Cal theory. I heard the Money theroy, they chased the $$$. I have read that Bob didn't want that fight and team Pav did. why do they get to choose only certain fights?

Ever since Abraham announced he was moving up, people have been on Kelly's back. Like it was his fault?atsch Get a grip people.

 

Money has a lot to do with it, and that is true with every fighter. To keep everything in context you have to go back to Duddy/Smichet. At one time Arum actually had a sensible plan for Pavlik. Duddy at MSG in the spring/early summer of '08, Rubio in the fall of '08, Abraham in January '09.

Duddy at the time would have been a fat pay day at MSG, and made KP look like a monster. Rubio was the presumed WBC mandatory, and KP would have to deal with him eventually.

**** went south when Duddy got cut up by Smichett. Arum was ringside screamin NO WAY is this guy fighting Kelly Pavlik. They ended up with Gary Lockett because HBO wanted it.

Next HBO turned down a Rubio fight. Arum actually offerred Pavlik $1 million to fight Rubio on a Top Rank PPV. Kelly ask him to find something that would pay more. Can't fault him for that, since he just made $2.5 million for Lockett. Williams fell out, Winky fell out, Hopkins stepped up. Pav lost badly, so they correctly decided to take care of mandatory Rubio before fighting Abraham. Sauerland said AA would stay at 160, and a date early next year was fine, but obviously it wasn't fine.

So there you have the whole freaking comedy of errors. However, I'm old enough to remember when the majority of fans said Alexis Arguello was just a skinny slugger who would never amount to much after he lost to Ernesto Marcel. We know how that turned out. I also remember when everybody said Danny "Little Red" Lopez was all done. A year later he was featherweight champ, and ruled the division for 4 years. I'm a long ways from giving up on KP. I just wish he'd shut the **** up, and get to work!

 

Okay so Boo, that was my point. The Promoter works for the fighter. Just like Cotto and Pac-man can deny an opponent so can Pavlik. And I don't ever want to see him fight Mora. I would rather him fight Martinez and Sergio is no walk in the park.

 

You forgot about the gov't and local taxes. They get the biggest cut.

 

It's not the loss that's disturbing; it's that he's suddenly become delusional enough to think he's among the biggest draws in boxing and that he doesn't have to do any work for the big fights to come knocking.

 

I dislike Kelly as a person.

Ohio isn't the place right now to be scoffing about million dollar purses and how bad taxes hurt. I respect his business decision, but he's running the risk of alienating his fan base with those kinds of comments.

If you think the fan base are the few people that post on ESB you are sadly mistaken. There is a reason Arum gives **** all about what goes on with boards like this.
