if that happens i'll be the first to eat crow and give paul his props. i like paul and think he is good for boxing and would be pulling for him in any other fight but this one. (but its not gonna happen )
That's true, but from what I've seen, good amateur fighters almost always have a higher "floor" than guys who don't go that route. They obviously don't all go on to become champs, and some aren't successful as pros because the power and chin may not translate to the pro game, but you can usually bank on them being at least an OK fighter.
Williams/Martinez was a hell of a fight. Paul continued to impress me with his ability to fight through adversity. When Martinez knocked him down, PW didn't seem to get rattled at all. I think if Martinez had more time left on the clock, PW may have been in real trouble, but that isn't how boxing works. Rounds are always 3 minutes, and Paul looked fine in the next round. In addition those cuts were nasty; more than enough to make a lot of fighters gun shy. However, those attributes of aggressiveness and a huge heart are the very things that will get PW in serious trouble if/when he fights Kelly Pavlik. The only guy who beat KP did it with ring intelligence, size, strength, power, defense, and masterful footwork. That's not how Williams fights. PW is a simple pressure fighter who comes out and goes to war. Every guy who tried that with KP got knocked out. Some of them were bigger than Paul, hit harder than Paul, were stronger than Paul, and had better chins than Paul. In a head on collision with KP, Williams gets knocked out everytime, but PW does not know any other way to fight. Martinez is a natural light-middle with a 50% KO ratio. Paul's reactions to Sergio's punches made it pretty clear that Paul Williams is not a middleweight. Everything I've read post-fight from Team Williams leads me to believe they now know that. I won't be surprised if Goosen, Haymon, and Peterson use Pavlik's hand problems, and unfinished business with Martinez, as a pretense for avoiding Pavlik all together. The best thing they can hope for at this point is to win the PR war like sauerland did, and keep PW at 147-154. The middleweight division gets Paul hurt.
used to like this guy...but i thought he didnt fight williams because his hand was messed up,how is he fighting this guy 2 weeks after the original date...was he scared??? i think he is the one that only really knows!!
Kelly Pavlik is full of excuses and full of ****!! The funny thing here is in the article provided Kelly states that he was gonna be stripped of the belts on Dec 19th if he didnt fight yet he talks as if he wanted to make the fight with PW late janurary, so wouldn't he have been stripped of the titles anyway? Would they have allowed the fight to go on in janurary w/o stripping his titles? Im just asking so let me know!
The "stripping" threat came out of the WBC's last meeting. That meeting happened after PW/KP was already off the table. If KP had a fight scheduled with PW, the WBC wouldn't have made the threat. Arum found Pavlik a ranked guy he can beat with one good hand after a ten month lay off. It's that simple.
the williams fight will happen and all questions will be answered. williams wanted the fight then there is no doubt...we'll see if he wants it now. i know you arent going to pay for the pav fight...but find a way to at least hear the post fight interview. while the dr. is grabbing espino by the ankles and smacking him in the ass like a new born to make sure he is still alive, pav will leave no room for interpretation who he wants to fight next. i understand fully that team williams is bitter about what has happened and you know i don't blame him one bit for fighting martinez on Dec. 5th. i just hope all sides can come to an agreement and get this fight made. i know pav wants it and i'm sure williams does too. everyone should hope the fight gets made regardless of why you think it didnt before :good
He was rattled its just that he played it off well and the bell had sounded so he got time to shake them cobwebs out!
Post Martinez fight Peterson said Pavlik/Williams will only happen at a 50/50 split. Translation, we know better now....:yep I don't see this fight happening. I see HBO pushing for Butte or the winner of Miranda/Stiegletz....
I did not mean to infer PW wasn't hurt. I think he was. Mentally he was not "rattled." He survived, and came back out strong.
