Joe is a victim of his own mouth. Just follow the time line. Sept 29, 2007: Pavlik destroys Taylor while Joe looks on via sattelite. After the fight HBO interviews Calzaghe, and Calzaghe calls Pavlik out. Nov 3, 2007: JC beats Kessler, and continues to call out Pavlik. Before any other fights are made, and before JT says he'll excersize his rematch clause, Joe runs down to the nursing home, and picks a fight with BHop. All through the winter and early spring, up until Arum announces the Lockett fight, JC continues to Call Pavlik out. April 19, 2008: Calzaghe wins a split decision over BHop, proclaims himself a legend killer, and says he wants Roy Jones. He doesn't mention Pavlik. Just prior to the Lockett fight an interviewer asks Pavlik who he wants to fight next. With no hesitation whatsoever Pavlik says "Calzaghe." In the mean time Top Rank offers Joe 10 million pounds to fight Pavlik. June 7, 2008: Pavlik destroys Joe's stablemate, but Joe wasn't there. In the post fight press conference a reporter ask Pavlik who he wants next. Without hesitation Kelly says "Calzaghe. It's up to Arum and Duncan. If they tell me to fight Godzilla, I'll fight Godzilla." On or about June 12-13 2008 Calzaghe tells the South Wales Argus: "A lot of people would love to see it. However, at this point, I think it's unlikely. I'm not sure if Pavlik really wants to face me at the moment." You can interpret that any way you like, but I call it ducking, plain and simple. If it were Kelly who had been running off at the mouth, it would be different, but Joe spent at least 7 months calling Pavlik out, and all of a sudden when Kelly says yes, Joe wants to fight a has been in RJJ!
Booradley your timeline is very incomplete. During that period Calzaghe called Jones out a bunch of times, even more than he called out Pavlik So according to your logic, he would be even more of a "victim to his own mouth" if he didn't fight RJJ
if anything i think it may be the other way around i dont see pavlik ducking calzaghe, but i c calzaghe going after a more of a high reward and less risk fight in fighting a legend in jones (an ageing jones at that ) rather then risking his legacy in fighting a smaller more dangerous fighter in pavlik, in fighting jones and winning that will looked good on joes record when he hangs them up weither jones being past his prime or not. because lets be honest jones would have schooled calazghe when he was at his best, i stil think he has a shot in beating him now.
I have to say I'm bitterly disappointed in Joe. For me he was halfway there to finishing his career in style. Beating an old legend and then a young pretender would (in my opinion) have put his legacy beyond doubt. Beating two old legends? I'm just not satisfied - borderline offended. At least with Hopkins you could argue that this legend was still on top of his game (he was Ring champion at LHW) but RJJ is nowhere near that standard. Surely Calzaghe's fans who have followed him his entire career despite some horrible match-ups deserve more than this? I don't think he has ducked Pavlik he has just got dollar signs flashing in his eyes.
I see what you mean. It's a lot better for all the Calzaghe supporters if I post something other than the facts.
Even if he didn't fight Pavlik and beat Jones I think he'd still fight Pavlik but it would have to be in Wales. Anyway if he did fight Jones and then Pavlik the Pavlik fans should be happy, ever day that goes by Joe gets worse (not much but you know what I mean in terms of getting older) and Kelly gets better so if I was Joe I would take the Pavlik fight asap because right now I'd expect Joe to beat him but in a year I don't know.
The word from the BBC is that the next fight is gonna be the last. I just don't know who Calzaghe is going to fool when he claims on retirement that RJJ cemented his legacy. If anything it undermines it! http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7452994.stm "Fighting the greatest fighter of the 1990s would be the perfect way to finish off my career. But he'll be fighting the greatest fighter of the millennium." So Joe...you accept that you're fighting someone who is now 9 years past their prime?
