Read Before Flaming:deal The rumours of a Pavlik/Duddy fight are swirling around the internet again. According to a recent article in the Irish Daily Star Top Rank has once again promised John Duddy a title shot. When I first got wind of this information I was appalled. I thought it would be ludicrous to fight Duddy with Abraham, Sturm, and the winner of Wright/Williams in the mix. However, after a little deeper thought I realized a Duddy fight could be a very good thing. John is fighting Matt Vanda on nexts months Pavlik card. This is a fight that SHOULD make John look pretty good. Assuming we don't get another Smichet type situation, it's a decent prelude to Pavlik/Duddy. I'm not excited about a feeding a nice kid like John Duddy to the proverbial wolves, but I think The Bob Father may be brewing up something special. On a certain level Pavlik/Duddy at MSG could be ****ing brilliant. (Unless you're John duddy, of course.) Consider this. Duddy has a huge Irish following in New york. Giovanni Lorenzo is a New York based fighter who would bring the Dominican and Puerto Rican fans. He's fighting Dionisio Miranda in an IBF title eliminator in February, and I expect him to beat "the other miranda." Arum has always said he wanted Abraham on a Pavlik card before they fight each other. I bet he tries to set up Pavlik/Duddy and Abraham/Lorenzo for June at MSG. HBO would buy it and the combination of Duddy, Lorenzo, and Pavlik would definitely sell out the Garden. It's big money, and Pavlik and Abraham both come away looking like freaking monsters! That sets up a huge PPV event for October. Brilliant!
OK. Make me look bad. Jsimps says he expects Pavlik/Abraham in June. That is as solid as it gets around here. Not sure AA fights too much outside of Germany otherwise because of money. The article VG linked too said Duddy would be end of the year.
This is all pure speculation on my part. However, we know Arum wants Pavlik/Abraham to be a major event rather than just another fight the hard core fans are calling for. We also know Arum wants AA on a Pavlik card, but it would take big bucks to do that. The combination of selling out MSG, and HBO buying the card, might provide the needed financing.
This stuff is always in flux. Like Duddy getting "smitcheted" while Arum scouted him as a possible bout for Kelly and even putting him on a few cards. That ended up giving us Lockett. I'm sure Arum expects Kelly and Arthur to win there next fights. But, until they do, nothing will happen. Simply can't for practical reasons. But, Arum is continually looking ahead, making plans, floating trail balloons, etc. I can't keep track of the people listed as 'possible' for Kelly. Some of it is just Arum doing other promoters favors and making it sound like the fights are possible. A lot of the fight game is 'buzz'. If Jsimps says he expects the next fight to be Abraham, that is as close as we get to what Team Pavlik is thinking. What is Arum thinking? Not even he knows.
The problem becomes Abraham's commitments. TV and mandatory wise. I know this is what Arum would like to do, but just getting them both with open dates at the same time is hard enough recently.
Duddy is not the only fighter we've gone down this road with. Top Rank promised Andy Lee a 4 fight deal. As part of that he was going to get 2 spots on Pavik undercards, and a title shot. All he had to do was beat Brian Vera, and look good doing it.
Alright, pay AA $700k (including worldwide TV money) and he would have no problem to come over to fight on Pavlik's undercard...
At least when Duddy goes down he will go down fighting and not take a knee everytime he is touched.:bbb Problem is, his good chin probably means more punishment:tired
In the scenario I laid out, paying Arthur $700K shouldn't be a problem. I also think that considering what a win could mean for their futures, KP and AA should both try to be as flexible as possible. Also, I didn't just pull the scenario I suggested out of the side of my neck. Obviously a number of variable elements would have to come together. However, it does make sense.
Why would Bob Arum promise Duddy a title shot when Duddy isn't promoted by Top Rank, and is currently in a lawsuit against his current promoters? That part of it doesn't make much sense. From a money perspective, a Pavlik-Duddy fight has always made sense, even if it would be a blowout.
