I would love to see Pavlik get with Freddy Roach. Here's the article. Tension builds in Team Pavlik Comments This content is protected Email PrintShareThis Published: Thu, August 5, 2010 @ 12:08 a.m. By JOE SCALZO This content is protected YOUNGSTOWN Four months after Kelly Pavlik lost his middleweight titles, cracks are beginning to show inside Team Pavlik. Pavliks father and co-manager, Mike Pavlik Sr., told Steve Kim of Max Boxing on Tuesday he believes his son needs new tutelage after spending his entire amateur and pro career under Jack Loew. I feel right now hes in the prime of his life and weve become one-dimensional and predictable, Mike Sr. told Kim. Im not bad-mouthing Jack. Its not that Jack has done anything wrong; Jack has reached a plateau that hes never been before. He doesnt know what to do. Although there have been occasional issues between Loew and Mike Sr. over the years, this is the first time the father has publicly questioned Loew. The tension stems from Pavliks unanimous decision loss in April to Sergio Martinez, whose speed and movement caused problems for the Youngstown fighter. When reached by phone Wednesday, the 28-year-old Pavlik said he hasnt considered making a change at trainer. Thats news to me, he said. For me to look at someone else, not to sound like a broken record, but I wasnt schooled [by Martinez]. In the middle rounds, I was frustrating him. I havent even thought of changing. Although Mike Sr. stopped short of saying he wanted a new trainer, he believes Loew needs to bring in someone to help. Mike Sr. did not return a call seeking comment on Wednesday, Loew, who declined comment for this article, told the website the problem wasnt the training, it was Pavliks condition entering camp and the fathers insistence on working out four or five times a day. Pavlik weighed more than 190 pounds entering camp 30 above the middleweight limit and, consequently, was drained on fight night. Loew said Pavlik needs to take better care of his body between fights and hire a professional nutritionist to safely make weight. Pavliks co-manager, Cameron Dunkin, doesnt think his fighter needs a new trainer, but agreed with Mike Sr. that Pavlik could benefit from different voices in the gym, both physically and mentally. This content is protected Nothing against Jack; hes taken him as far as he can go, said Dunkin. But Kellys not learning anything. Hes not excited, hes not motivated. I never want to get rid of Jack; he knows the kid as well as anybody. But I think if somebody came in and helped, that would be good. Dunkin said many top fighters train at gyms with multiple trainers and spend time inside the gym outside of training camp, gaining exposure to different styles from different cultural backgrounds. They also attend fights in person to pick up on new approaches, something Pavlik rarely does. (Although he does watch fights on TV.) Theres a whole lot of new ideas going on and Kelly doesnt see any of that, said Dunkin. To close his eyes and not see other guys and other thoughts and other fighters and other places, its just stupid. Its not fair to him and hes never going to grow and hes never going to get any better. Pavliks promoter, Top Rank chairman Bob Arum, told Fanhouse on Wednesday hes discussed a possible HBO fight in the fall between Pavlik and Russian Dmitry Pirog, the newly crowned WBO middleweight champion. Pirog (17-0, 14 KOs) won the title with a fifth-round KO of Daniel Jacobs on Saturday. The title was one of two won by Martinez against Pavlik (the WBC belt was other), who vacated both when he didnt make a title defense in time. Dunkin confirmed the camps interest in the Pirog fight but Pavlik said he knows little of the discussions. Ive never heard of the guy, said Pavlik, who recently returned from a Hawaiian vacation with his wife. I told everybody, the only way Im going to fight at 160 is if a nutritionist tells me I can make the weight and be healthy. If they offer the right money and a nutritionist said its OK, its a definite possibility.
If Kelly gets a new trainer than they are going to need a lot of time to work together because I think they would try and make a lot of changes in Kelly and their is a ton of stuff that Kelly was never tought (due to Leow's lack of knowledge) that a new trainer will insist he learn and master. So if he does switch than they would have to delay any fight with Pirog and stick to tune ups so that Kelly can get comfortable with his new trainer, whoever it may be.
He needs an entire new team and he needs to go into training camp somewhere there are no distractions.
He needs a new attitude imo, his complaining about not being able to land again in the martinez fight was very worrying, im not sure if hes right in the head after that
I agree with Kelly's father and Dinkin. Pavlik def. needs a new trainer. Roach would do great things with him KElly needs to listen to them if he wants to continue being successful.
It's amazing how far Pavlik has fell in the last two years. Probably the biggest disappointment of the decade.
Please be so kind to remove your mouth from Freddie's *****. Thank You Idk why everyone is looking down on Pavlik. Yeah he lost, but he still did good against Martinez. Hes still a top fighter without a doubt. I think all he needs is a nutritionist, get out of his hometown to train and to get back to the basics. He should keep his current trainer. Pavlik is a basic fighter. 1/2s are his best punch. Its working so far so **** it...keep throwing that **** till the man in front of you falls down. A couple taunts by sticking your tongue out and that should close the deal. :bbb
Nice post , thanks mate :good Sounds like there is some **** happening in team Pavlik , coming into camp @190 !!!!! **** thats incredible , for the wrong reasons , i like Pavlik but he's been very inactive and badly beaten twice , he needs something big soon or he may never be relevant again , he looks humungous for 160 sureley he has to go to SMW , i mean he looks a lot lot bigger than when he fought Taylor the 1st time , and he's banging on about weight issues , i dont know why the **** he doesnt just say **** it and get in with Bute or Pascal ..........................
