Arthur leaving the division is a chicken **** move. He spent a year running his mouth, and when it came time to negotiate Sauerland/Abraham never made a serious offer. If you think they did, please provide the details. Size of purse, purse split, venue, TV arrangments, et. No one can provide those details because they never existed. Sauerland was quick to provide proof of his offer to Sturm, but he can't seem to do that where Pavlik is concerned. Arthur did not show any signs of weight drain in the Oral fight. He claimed he felt great, and made the weight easily. He did not have any problems with stamina, or strength, or anything else. When Top Rank said they were looking at a Sturm fight for October, Sauerland and Abraham said a date early next year would be fine with them. Apparently it's not fine. It was just more of Sauerland's lies. At least Zuniga, Miranda, and Taylor fought Pavlik before they left the division. Abraham is leaving without a fight, and Sauerland is cashing him out in this Showtime Tournament. They did a great job of using Pavlik's name to build Arthur's popularity, but they never had any intention of fighting.
Abraham has the best chance, though I think that's a 75-25 fight for Pavlik. Sturm will just get overwhelmed. He's a good boxer, but Pavlik is too strong and too intense. Williams will get KO'd. This is an abominable stylistic match-up for PW. PW is a volume puncher who likes to pepper people. Pavlik walks people down and hammers them. He'll be too strong.
I agree about Williams getting KOed, but stylistically I think Pavlik/Williams is the best fight for the fans. Good God! We would see some rounds with a collective total of over 200 punches! Pavlik would use his strength and toughness to drag Pwilly into a war and end it in 5-7 rounds, but I guaran-freaking-tee you they would be EXCITING rounds.
Williams will beat Pavlik if given the chance other than WIlliams and Abraham though I do not see anyone under middleweight being tough enough and strong enough to beat him unless Kirkland comes back in tip top form.
:good yes. lord that would be fun and we would find a lot out about both fighters. i agree that pav would be too much and overwhelm pw but it would be a helluva ride while it lasted
Nobody beats Pavlik at MW but Abraham. It's a dead division. Williams will most certainly get ktfo, and I'm a fan of his. Pavlik is a real MW, a big one, with serious power at 160. No one on the radar right now beats him.
If Abraham does move up to 168 for the Showtime tourney then that is a good move on his part but it sucks for Pavlik. Abraham-Pavlik was an exciting and very signifigant fight that will lose luster if it happens at a higher weight, if it ever happens at all. There are still a few good challenges at middleweight for Pavlik. Williams, Winky, and Sturm make for good fights but all three are underdogs. There are a few young middleweights like Jacobs and Korobov but those are a couple years away and Pavlik probably won't be at 160 then. Then maybe one or two of the jr middleweights like Kirkland, Angulo, or Martinez might move up and give it a shot but they'd also be sizable underdogs. Without Abraham around I wouldn't be surprised if Pavlik moves up after another fight or two. Hopefully his last fights come against Williams, Sturm, or Winky but supermiddleweight is just too deep to avoid.
I agree with most of what you said in this post, but AA moving to 168 is a VERY bad idea. He absolutely sucks against anybody over 6 foot, and we're talking he sucked against LuJaun Simon. At 168 the entire top 10 is over 6 foot, and those guys would take Simon and Oral out in 2 or 3 rounds.
sturm is the only FIGHT at middleweight for him. that's until williams moves up proper. then pavlik will have the pleasure of walking him down and knocking him out. as of now i see middle as his domain until a young fighter moves through the ranks and provides a real challenge. even looking at light middle, there's no one really with the skills to move up
The tourney didn't make sense to me until it came out that Saurland expects to get the rights to promote Kessler. Now Saurland has two guys in the tourney, one that would be the favorite and AA. He can now afford to risk AA's "OH" with Kessler under contract.
