Let's how Pavlik does without polio, a bad back and a broken rib on his left side. Realistically though instead of ramrodding Pavlik fanatics for clinging to the illness issue involved, I'd prefer to see somebody explain to me what Pavlik could do differently to beat Hopkins a second time around. If you wish, you can include "decline due to age" in there. That's perfectly acceptable.
C'mon now. That's like saying at the time that a Hopkins/Trinidud rematch would've been warranted. Hopkins whooped the dog **** out of both Trinidud and Pavlic. Against Taylor, he was robbed and robbed again in the rematch. Point is you could've made a better case for a rematch in Hop's fight against Taylor, not Pavlic.
Is a Pavlik rematch better than the Jones rematch? thoughts? I think that shows balls from Pavlik's camp. Guy wants revenge.
Brave but stupid. Pavlik wont beat Hopkins until Hopkins begins to slip even more. So by about age 50 Pavlik should be able to beat him. If Pavlik is not retired by then.
Came close? Sir, I believe Hopkins did more thanc ome close This is true but all explanations state Pavlik had only started road work and minor preparations. It's not like he was 5 months into training for Williams when Hopkins jumped in and took a gap toothed bite out of him. Neither one of these is of much good. Even though I do remember Pavlik bruising his elbow prior to the fight, we've seen countless other guys go out there and put on great performances with injuries. Roy Jones Jr for one, took on Tito Trinidad with a partially torn collarbone. He also took on Tolesco after breaking his hand in training. Alexander Povetkin took on Eddie Chambers with the flu and was topping 100 punches consistently. Did the injury effect his performance? Positively sure it did. Is it the be all end all? Absolutely not. If I had to put a ghetto barometer on this thing, I'd say it was 85% Hopkins, 10% 10 lb weight increase and 5% injury. I wouldn't expect anything less from him. I think when push comes to shove, Pavlik is a warrior who'd like nothing less than a rematch. I just think we need to maintain levity on the issue.
If he genuinely does want to rematch Hopkins then fair play to him. I think most in here are commending him for that. It's just most here don't think it would make for a very interesting fight. That's all. If you think had Pavlik not been a bit sick he would have beaten Hopkins, I think you are very wrong. B-Hop is a stylistic nightmare for Pavlik. He was losing that fight anyway in my opinion.
I've watched Hopkins/Pavlik several times. Hopkins looked like a man who was not going to be easily denied. However, he fought a version of Pavlik that would have got knocked out by Zuniga, Miranda, and Taylor, and would have probably lost a close decision to McKart. Watch the two Pavlik/Taylor fights, and then watch Pavlik/Hopkins back to back. Regardless of style issues, it's clearly not the same fighter.
Being in the ring with a guy who has your number from the first minute of the first round will certainly make you look like a different fighter than you looked like against guys you beat.
