Exactly correct. No way Bute takes on someone like Pavlik before the Froch re-match. He needs a "tune up" fight to get his confidence back. If he loses to Pavlik, most likely fans would lose any and all interest in the rematch. Except for in Montreal and in Nottingham. So the PPV would be very low.

Well, beating Pavlik could also be a tremendous boost and confidence builder for Bute heading into that fight.

Yeah Im not sure I dig it, to be honest. I think it doesn't suit Pavlik's body attributes. He was looking more like PW in really not using his height and just do a lot of inside fighting. I think he has always developed his power from using full leverage and hitting guys at this end his long punches.

Let me guess...you are NOT the manager/promoter of any boxers :D

I agree with you, but that's not the way it works. Bute can fight Pavlik AFTER Froch, win or lose, and still make the same amount of money without risking the Froch re-match payday.

Pavlik only had a midrange game. Maybe Bazooka was right saying he was still just working on things and not letting it 'all out' just yet.

Ya got me. Honestly, I don't see Pavlik as likely next opponent for Bute or Froch. Supposedly Kessler didn't want Froch because he needs a breather. Not sure why after Green though.

Pavlik vs Bute would be an excellent fight.....both Bute and Froch are taking another fight each before their rematch and beating bums ain't gonna help Bute do anything different in a Froch rematch but fighting Pavlik certainly would!

Great crossroads fight.....winner gets Froch and loser has to seriously consider retirement unless it's a close fight.

On the other hand Pavlik makes sense for Froch's fight before the Bute fight as well as Froch clearly doesn't need a similar opponent to Lucien to prepare for him(pretty sure he knows exactly what he needs to do- aka mirror his first fight performance) and Pavlik is a big name, another notch on Froch's incredible resume and a fight he almost surely wins.

I'd rather Bute vs Pavlik cause if Bute gets through that it'll help him in a Froch rematch and if Pavlik wins he establishes himself as a legit top SMW.

Not to mention showing Bute to the US Market, also granting Showtime's wishes of an American opponent.

So Kessler has more world championship defenses than any other SMW, is one of only 3-4 current fighters who has been the longest continuously (Hopkins, Pacquiao and Floyd are the others as I remember) in the Ring top 10, and has only ever lost to two fighters... both of whom top 3 P4P fighters and both away on hostile soil....

And he "is just not that good"??

    How old are you?

Bute would earn Pavlik a few bob. It would be a good cashing out fight for him. Makes sense for both fighters.

"That good" or bad style match-up as in Kelly needs to steer far away from him. As for credentials lets look at his competition. I believe he lost to Froch, although it was a competitive fight and he was completely outclassed and embarrassed by Ward and clearly lost to Calzaghe. Besides that, what are his best wins, Green? Records could be deceiving. His peak could have been when he fought Calzaghe. At this point he is on a decline and has had his share of injuries. I never thought he was great and at this point he isn't that good.

IF you think Froch won that fight then you lose a lot of credibility. The only ones who think Froch won are typically people who has never seen the fight but just heard Froch repeat over and over "it could have gone either way"...

22 of 23 International reporters at ringside had Kessler winning. An unusual agreement among reporters from all over the world.

    The punch stats were:
    Kessler - Total Thrown: 765, Total Connects: 147 (19%)
    Froch - Total Thrown: 546, Total Connects: 98 (18%)
Overwhelmingly clear to land about 50% more punches.

Kessler won on all three scorecards obviously as well.

On ESB more than 90% had Kessler winning the fight. This is an overwhelming majority for ESB standards.. much more than most other clear wins get. Even a majority of English boxing fans agreed that Kessler won. So only the most extreme Froch fans (or people who has never seen the fight) would dream of arguing that Froch actually won.

Sure the fight was competitive and a great battle but there is really no way Froch won that fight.

Kelly "El Fantasma" Pavliko is ready for either Bute or Kessler.
He is what he is now... Don't see what any more tune-up's will do for him.

I'd take him over both as is.
