Having just read Pavliks interview in the most recent Ring magazine I was surprised to find out that he had to pay big money for his belts. He says he had to pay $20,000 , $15,000 and $1,000 for his belts but didnt specify which. This is pretty shocking to me cause I always thought the belts were given to the fighters once they won them. To top it all off Kelly says it isnt even real gold!!! I can only assume he paid $20,000 for the WBC belt, $15,000 for the WBO and $1,000 for the Ring belt.

Why do you think the WBA has two belts ie Regular Champ & Super champ ? More champs / belts = more fees :good

Yea, I understand about the fees. But i thought these fees were paid upon fights, e.g defences of their titles, not on the belts themselves. Surely charging a champion for a belt is crossing the line in terms of making money.

I thought the ring belt was free? Any how this is why I dont give fighters **** for not unifying. Because its not a set fee they pay but a percentage of their purse. They put thier lives on the line and have to pay fees to carry around a plastic belt.Sad

That's why Baldomir didn't pay for the WBA/IBF and only for the WBC, those fees are ridiculous. The fighters already have to go through hell in training and in the ring to earn a victory and championship status, then they also have to pay for it?, stupid.

Baldomir didn't pay his sanctioning fees upfront for IBF, he wasn't rated in their Top 15.

In normal situations, the sanctioning body would make the belt vacant. They lost all their credibility in that move in my mind.

So what happens if the fighter refuses to pay for the belts?

    Baldomir situation.

If sanctioning fees aren't paid, they're not eligible for the title.

In most situations, this would mean the title becomes vacant. Unless you're the IBF and want to validate Judah vs Mayweather as being a title fight, in which case you give the title back to the loser because the victor hadn't paid his sanctioning fees.

I can't see how they can charge a sanctioning fee especially if the champion is fighting a mandatory. Otherwise I understand it, but not 20 gs thats ****ing robbery

20K is too much for a belt.

For that amount of cash, those belts better be made of gold.

wow this is incredibly stupid. id rather beat the beltholders and let it be vacant or givin back then pay for something ive earned. i can understand the fighters earnin a lot for the fight (although some REALLY dont) but charging a price for plastic and bragging rights is stupid.
