Pavlik is a crude, limited open brawler? What are his technical faults?

Pavlik reminds me of a young Cassius Clay, actually.

Sometimes when he throws a combination he has the tendacy to drop his hands for a few seconds, its something i notice Cotto do sometimes to.

First off I don't think Pavlik is "a crude limited open Brawler" His talents are real, and many are not noticed seen unless you look close.

Pavlik is a guy who learned to fight the way that is best suited for his physical ability. He is a tall guy who fights tall. He uses his long reach to his advantage. His jab is very hard and accurate. He isn't afraid to get hit, and because of that he doesn't think that much in the ring, he just fights, and that keeps he from getting rattled easy. He has great power, mostly in his right. His left hook is so-so, because of the way he throws it. He is a good body puncher, when he gos there, which is not that often. He has a decent chin. Very limited head movement, so-so foot movement and average hand speed. Not really a combo puncher, but a busy offensive fighter. A good finisher if he hurts you.

So how do you beat him?

First off you have to move side to side, body and head. Kelly moves like he is on a tight rope. Straight forward and backward is his natural movement. Mostly because he stands with one foot behind the other too much, and he bends his knees very little (which is the reeason his left hook is about 50% the power of his right hand). His legs seem stiff at times. You will need feints, with head movement to avoid his punches, rather than blocking. He seems very good at punching through gloves. The plan here is to slip his punches, and move inside his arms. From there, going left I would work a double left hook, body-head, Going right I would work a right to the body, followed with a right uppercut. If you notice Pavlik rarely trys to slip a punch, and counter. He uses his gloves to pick, or block punches. Lots of combinations may freeze him up. My observation of him is that he likes to take turns punching. Meaning he punches, then when the other guy punches he just blocks, till its his turn. Naturally he likes to be the one punching.
I think a young RJJ, SRL, or maybe even JC would be tough for Kelly to handle. Lateral movement, combined with fast hands and feet is the keys to beat him. Easier said than done I will admit.

However at this point I think he would beat RJJ, or JC.

One of his faults is that he has only been seriously hurt once. When he hit the canvas against Taylor, he should have stayed on one knee and taken the 8 count to gather his thoughts. He also brings his right hand back a little awkwardly after a straight right.

:patsch :patsch No offensive brother but IMO no two fighters could be more different?? I will be glad to explain if you like, but if you just watch any Clay fight, then right after that watch any Pavlik fight you see the difference. Its pretty clear, other than they are both pretty tall.

He is a bit flat footed and doesn't move up upper body..Why? because he hits like a tank and he barely has to worry about his defense. Yeah it will eventually cost him but....It hasn't so far lol

i agree. Cal has a great shot at doing so, he'll move away from the right hand and keep his lead foot outside KP's with his hands extended slightly and go right over top of Pavlik's jab. Joe will be hell bent on winning the jabbing contest.

he may have a lot of technical faults... but the bottom line is that he gets the job done.

One thing that I noticed is that he has a long recovery from throwing a straight right because he wips it down then back up then finally moves it back into position. Kind of like Roy Jones straight right which also had a wierd motion when recovering.

I think is defense is underrated also. He Does slap alot of punches away with his gloves. He is cocky when he gets hit tho, but after taking the BOMBS from JT I would be a lil cocky to from here on out, which he did against lockett.

this is it in a nutshell.

he's a people's champion - better than gatti but not so good that he can hold teh banner forever. depending on how good the opposition is of course.

What he does lack won't change much, mostly because he doesn't have to change it. He is limited by his physical attributes. I am not saying he is not athletic, but he is nowhere near the natural athletic ability of guys like Miranda and Taylor. He fights perfectly with what talents he does have, and whatever he lacks he makes up for 1000% with his heart, determination and work ethic.

I am a big fan of Pavlik and Calzaghe, but honestly I don't see JC winning this fight, and if he did I would be convinced that JC is in fact an ATG.

  13. Pavlik should stay on top for a long time as long as he wants it, he's just a kid only 26-27, and has a chin of iron Taylor almost ko'd him but JT dosen't have a big punch, right now i'd make Pavlik a very SLIGHT dog against Calzaghe:huh but Joe is pushing 37, maybe Pavliks people are waiting for Joe to age more:yep hope it happens..

what do you mean about natural athletic ability compared to taylor or miranda?

miranda got PWNED and beaten to teh punch repeatedly. good fight but kelly clearly cleaned up there.
