I have to admit I thought Jermain was gonna pull it off but boy was I in for a suprise! Pavlik truly is the man, after all he beat the man (Twice!) who beat the man (Twice too!); wow. It's weird though because when I look at Pavlik in the ring, out of it and at weigh in's he doesn't seem right - especially in the ring. You can see his punches coming a mile off and his jab - which yes, I know sets up his power shots sooooo often but still - is very slow. When you look at him as an observer he doesn't seem that great.....but he is! He just pushes and pushes and pushes always coming forwards pressuring non stop ,his style just works and it's likely only the best most smart and technical boxer's will ever beat him; if ever. His take a punch to throw a punch style has me in awe I'll admit and though he doesn't look it the man has power oh my god does he have power! Pavlik buddy, you made a fan outta me Saturday, sorry I doubted you, I salute you sir!
Sad thing is now many people are back to doubting Pavlik as he appeared to have an "off" nite(he said he felt stiff in there and I think it showed albeit subtle) and he didnt KO Jermain..I think it showcased the fact that he can rely on a solid jab....Jermain fought the best fight of his life and lost because of Kellys jab...No crude puncher can do that....
Pavlik does look slow and easy to time out, but when if you watch his right hand money punch in slow motion (seriously do it) he adjusts it beautifully to hit the target. It almost looks like a homing missile finding its target. So while opponents are attempting to slip or block his right is still finding the target. He is a special guy imo
I agree, he looks like such a plodder at times. He has a lot of flaws, most notably his defence and speed. But he also does a lot of things well, good power, work rate and jab It's when some of those factors are negated I worry for him, such as at a higher weight Can't knock him though, he gets the job done
He can be outboxed, which I think most people here realized way before saturday. The thing about Pavlik is consistency. He never stops looking for that right hand. Kinda like how Tszyu was, too. Massive right hand power and looks for the ending punch all night long. He can also take a good beating too, which doesn't spell win for other brawlers/boxer-punchers. A pure boxer may just beat him. As strange as this may sound, I could see a guy like Cory Spinks giving him some issues. Someone who will exploit the fact that he is an obvious 1-2, come forward puncher.
Not sad for Pavlik. It's great. I've always said one of Kelly's best assets is that he is underestimated. Taylor fought the fight of his life, is a big strong middleweight and showed a great jab and defence. Kelly almost had him out with 25 seconds to go in the 11th. The next guy Kelly fights is going to get his head torn off by the right hand.
I agree, but I didn't want to get into his flaws because we are giving him his dues in this thread. But yes, a "pure" boxer would give him fits and could decision him. Taylor was having success but the tank ran empty
That's definately Taylor's big problem - he has no stamina for a whole 12 rounds. This is why a guy like Kessler would decision him easily.
Good for you, MC. Glad to see that you've noticed what caught my eye a few years ago. But I have to admit, today I was kinda thinking the same thing you just brought up...how does he do it? Taylor was so much quicker & still lost. Kelly is relentless (sorry I had to use that word...where is he??? ) in applying pressure, hits well with both hands & like someone just said, the technique (watch it in slow-mo, thing of beauty) on his right hand is a menace to deal with. But that jab, the most impoertant punch in boxing, is what makes him who he is.
So ive heard a few names next for Kelly. Duddy, Tito, Abraham,,,,,,who do you guys think is next for Pav? I am thinking Duddy in the summer and Abraham in late '08....
