Pavlik is an Enigma

Forrest couldn't avoid Mayorga. I don't think for a second he'll avoid Pavlik. Brutal ko there.

It'll take someone with no intention of scoring a knockout. Someone fast enough to limit output to 1-2s, get in fast, score and get out. Someone who can make an offensive plodder with a limited 1-2 miss and then pay. Cory Spinks is really the only guy I see fitting that bill.

 

Pavlik has the following things going for him.....

A) Stanima up the wazoo
I can't think of any middleweight who comes even close. He went 12 rounds in a very tough physical fight and never gassed out. This is what beat Jermain Taylor. Taylor had to fight conservatively so he could go the full 12 rounds. Pavlik not so.

B) Timing and Accuracy
Pavlik is extremely accurate with his jab. And his timing is such that he can even catch faster boxers. I bet more than a few boxers have been beaten by Pavlik watched the tape and said to themselves "How does he keep managing to hit me like that?"

C) Sheer Aggression and Heart
Pavlik doesn't hold back. He doesn't retreat. He makes his opponents work for the whole 36 minutes ( or less if they don't last that long ) he's boxing with them. And he's got the physical tools to pull it off.

D) A Granite Chin
Not so much with Taylor, but with Miranda I did see Pavlik take some really, really hard shots and make it through them. Of course near that chin is a glass nose that seems to always get bloodied in every fight.

E) Better Defense than it looks
Pavlik does get hit a lot. But he partially blocks, moves and does other things to take the power out of those shots when they hit him. It was one of the things that really impressed Stewart. Pavlik's defense is a lot better than it looks.

F) Heavy, heavy hands
Pavlik hits hard and he doesn't lose his power as the fight goes on. Pavlik didn't manage to knock Taylor out but he did hurt him in the 11th round. I doubt Taylor could have gotten through a 13th round.

 

Yes, I would also like to see him go to the body more. His jab, really good, Pavlik trains very hard and that really gives him an edge. He works for his money.

 

I see Pavlik as a Marciano type fighter, he is not the most fluid guy in the ring, he takes a lot more punches than he should, doesn't have the fastest hands or great head movement, but is relentless, tough, determined, and heavy handed. When I see Pavlik in against someone like Taylor, with great skill, speed and power, I still wait for the moment when Pavlik finally wears him down or connects with a flush shot that turns his legs to rubber.

To be honest I could see Abraham "possibly" giving Pavlik a really tough fight. Not because he is a pure boxer, but because he has the best one-punch power in the division and he would surely connect on Pavlik flush a few times. I think Pav/AA would be a brutal war with both guys kissing the canvas and Pavlik eventually getting the mid-late ko.

 

Cory is boring.

 

Spinks has stanima issues just like Taylor does or he'd have beaten Taylor in their fight.

Pavlik would counter Spinks via sheer aggression and workrate. He might only hit Spinks with 10% of his punches in the opening rounds but those punchs would take Spinks down.

 

if he fights duddy he will walk right through him. I would like to see him fight AA. Or a battle of the balds with sergio mora just so he could get brutally ko'ed

 

Pavlik will walk through the top list of possibles...Abraham, Duddy, Trinidad, and Lee. Problem I see coming is from some mandatory that no expects to beat him. Pavlik seems to feed on situations where there is a lot doubt. He shines in his underdog status.

 

Andy Lee is a very good fighter.

Mayorga beat the crap out of Spinks, Pavlik would kill him!!!

 

Irlandsk: I had seen that Pavlik clip probably 100 times now, but not in a good while. Kelly is really comin into it now. Look at how big he looks now, all around, compared to in that clip. Especially vs. McKart this just caught my attention.

 

I noticed the same as I watched his best of 2007 clip, he is really settling into his prime right now and is something special to watch. One of the most enjoyable fighters to come along in a while, he should be at or around the top for a while, which is good news considering his fights are always quality.

I dont think Spinks is anywhere as good as Taylor smaller, weaker, Kelly would blast right through this guy easy.
