You are right. they are not the same.
Alcoholics may desire alcohol for a wide range of reasons.
Cancer is a susceptibility due to an auto-immunization disorder which is generally due to a genetic mutation.
As example, skin cancer, or Melanoma is due to an autosomal genetic defect effecting the immunity system which is unable to repair radiation damaged skin. Completely unrelated to alcoholism.
Alcoholism is indeed a personal choice. One can decide not to consume alcohol, but one cannot so easily decide to stay out of the sun.:good

 

Initially alcohol is a personal choice, but when the brain changes, there is addiction as a consequent.

When someone is tanning too much that is a personal choice But once the cancer begins, they have no choice as to how it progresses.

 

I agree, many people can be addicted and overcome it's affects. But you have to remember there are different levels of addiction as there are different levels of cancer. Hepatitis C is a disease. It resolves somehow, unexplained in about 25% of patients.

 

Actually, one does not have to be "tanning" to contract melanoma. Some people with type 1 or 2 skin do not tan, but burn.

The greatest catalast is environment, with the highest incidence rate being in Australia, Israel, The UK, U.S.A., Africa. Usually by people who have moved from an environment with lower UV index (Russia/Germany) into an environment with higher UV index (see above), coupled with genetic immunization compromise, so they are unable to repair damaged skin burn.
The personal choice then becomes, should I move from Russia to Israel/Australia?

Yes you can. It can be a ***** to persevere but you have control. Lets not act like Pavlik has been an alcoholic for 30 years and it's impossible to defeat this. Pavlik also has money and support to get the treatment that many others can't afford. It's gonna take some mental strength and faith that he supposedly has. He also has a little daughter, so if that can't motivate him to change, then nothing will. If you give up, then you die. It's as simple as that. Nobody is gonna feel sorry for Pavlik and baby him. This world is a ***** and you gotta do for self.

I don't disagree with this at all. I think Pavlik is not what I was talking about. He does have all the tools to be treated. I am just saying addiction is a disease. Volkow is the head of NIDA. A very highly respected MD. If anyone googles NIDA and looks at the very simplfied explanations it will say that addiction is a disease of the brain that is a chornic and relapsing condition like anything else. The personal choice is irrelevant as are the people that happen to overcome it without treatment. It doesn't mean that the brain didn't change. It doesn't mean relapse can't occur. Just like it is not explainable why 25% of people "cure themselves" from Hepatitis C; a disease that causes liver failure and possibly death. It is treatable..but a disease. The people that cure themselves has no relevance to it being a disease. Just like some may "will themselves better" that is very few and far between. Look at cigarettes and how many people that kills. It started as a choice...but later became an addiction.

Anyways, I am out of this thread. Pavlik sucks. My sparring Partner deserved the fight and pavlik can go drinking in a ****ing watering hole for all I care. that was classless BS he pulled. Disgrace to the sport. He can leave.

 

Did anyone remind Pavlik that he was fighting Darryl Cunningham this weekend and NOT Lucian Bute.
